I have recently picked up the complete CD versions of X-wing, and TIE Fighter, and I admit, I've fallen for these games again. As great a series as it is, I'm surprised that they haven't come out with a new one yet.

Anyone remember these classics?

Frakkin'. Awesome.

Tie-Fighter is the bar-none BEST flight sim game that I've played (granted, it isn't really a flight sim, but I did love doing strafting runs and all that jazz...).

And X-wing, the original one was... mehy, it wasn't as fun or as good as Tie-Figther. But it was a good place to start.

Upgrades I enjoyed in TF: The ability to shoot certain parts, so you could disable a ship easily.
Upgraded graphics.
THRAWN!
And the Emperor's Hand sideline (ok, I know it wasn't hand, but I never figured out the name. Bleck.)

I wish they'd remake them, I can't play TF on Win XP. :(

Besides, Rogue Squadron sucked compared to TF. TF rocks!

Set compatablity modt to Win95, and play using the actual EXE file, not the launcher.

TF was indeed a pwnful game. Like Althane, I can't play on my computer (at least, not with out significant work) but I would.
Rogue Squadron was pretty bad, but I liked RS2.

For some reason, the era of full-size Joystick games seems to have passed.

A pity, because I remeber my first joystick.

Square box, stick, and three buttons. Hehehe, such fun. Except my little brother broke it. >_>

Then my new joystick has like 7 buttons, a trigger, a sensitivity gauge, and is three times bigger (I jest... mostly). Dammmnnn... what're they like today?

Anyways, I'll have to dig up the game and try compatability mode. I just recently found an old Sierra game, back when they were still good, so lesse if I can get into an old games mood.

Dooommm! And TF! And... Cyberstorm?

Meh.

I always liked X-Wing more than I liked TIE Fighter...guess I'm weird.

Of course, that might of been because X-Wing ran on my XP system without making a fuss...I lucked out there.

I'm pretty sure the X-Wing & Tie Fighter series has been abandoned, not that you can't find a newer game (ala Rogue Squadron) in which you can do similar stuff, I just don't think there'll be another game in that series.

I remember waiting with baited breath for the Mac version of TIE Fighter to drop so I could finally play. TIE Fighter is actually the game that originally got me hooked on Star Wars. Unfortunately, my crappy joystick only let me pitch and yaw, and made it impossible to roll. All five of the buttons operated as "Fire". Regardless, I loved those games more than anything.

I sure wish I had a chance to play with a real stick on a real computer, because my old Mac was a hunk of crap.

I remember the originals being excellent, and then X-Wing vs Tie Fighter sucking. Hard. They fixed it by X-Wing Alliance however, and that game was crazy-good.

I can't comment much on Tie-Fighter, since I played it about seven or six years ago, and I can barely remember past the last four. I do know that I sunk hours upon hours into that game.

Heh, I think my favorite thing about XWA was that you can make up your own missions. Ahhhh 8-on-8 squadron dogfights......

I never played XWA, wish I had picked it up when I had the chance.

Finding old games is so hard, and I hate buying from Lucas Arts online. >_>

Amazon.com is where I found the X-wing games.

Amazon.com is where I found the X-wing games.

The zShops section being particuarlly good for finding old stuff. If you don't know how to find the zShops, go the main Amazon.com page, and near the search bar, there's a pull down for specific departments. Zshops are near the bottom.

When you do a search there, you get results for both Marketplace & the Zshops, usually better results (when looking for older stuff) than you'd be able to find with just a normal search.

TIE Fighter is not only my favorite space-simulator game out there, but it's also one of my top five favorite games of all time.

Seriously. The graphics may not be pretty, but the sheer amount of freedom, crazy subplots and bonus missions you can undertake in TIE is unprecedented. Even modern-day games just don't have the scope of TIE Fighter. I remember playing a PS1 game called "Colony Wars: Red Sun" and actually thinking to myself "Wow, this is a step backwards from TIE."

TIE Fighter is the kind of challenging, invigorating experience that's actually worth playing videogames for. Awesome plotlines. Great characters (one notable one borrowed from Timothy Zahn's superb novels.) Amazing depth. Liberating gameplay. God Himself would have difficulty making a videogame much better than this.

Compared to now the graphics aren't much to look at. However, the first time I saw TIE Fighter, I was blown away by the detail. That was probably about 10 years ago. Even X-Wing, it's predecessor, was trivial in comparison to the textures and details (even though most of the extra textures were laser turrets that were simple pyramids or cones). The number of hours I spent trying to earn flight badges and tour of duty ribbons were innumerable. I think the only game I've ever spent more time on was FFX, which still isn't entirely accurate, since a good deal of the recorded time on my file was simply from leaving the game on overnight or pausing while I went to school.

Blast! Now I must procure these gems for myself, and buy a new joystick. What're they going for now, 50 or 60 bucks? Lame.

Well, the version I have has a major graphical upgrade. I'll have to take some screenshots next time I play it.

On ye olde first X-wing my pilot's picture was a Mon Calimari. Never been able to get that picture again...

Anywho, Unarguably the best starwars ship: The Tie Defender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tie_defender)

Just look at those numbers!

Bah. I've shot down many a trip in my A-wing.

I don't know what you guys're talking about, it's gunboats all the way.

Althane

Gunboats? Bleh. Fly like they're drunk.

Now, where it's at is the Tie Interceptor. Speed out the wazoo.

Buddha Fett

If you like speed, then stick with the TIE Defender; drain your shields' power to the engines and BAM! Better-euipped TIE Interceptor.

BTW, I like the drunken flying; it makes some of the missions...more interesting.

I owned Tie Fighter before X-wing, and I never liked the latter as much. I have a thing for the Galactic Empire, of course. Also, nothing the Rebellion could throw into space compared to the TIE Defender. Sorry. Or even the TIE Advanced. Though I do like A-wings.

I still play X-wing vs. TIE Fighter, as it runs in XP no problems. My versions of the other games are DOS-mode, so I don't see how compatability mode will help me out for them. I also don't know where the disks went to in order to even install them. A shame, for they were great.

I would gladly welcome a newer space superiority fighter flying game from the Star Wars line.

My only complaint from X-Wing Alliance was that it sucked so much to be disabled by an ion cannon, and just float there for the rest of the game. It was so humiliating, especially when they would board you right after, and then take your hull down to 1%.

*shakes with rage at those memories*

How'd that happon to you? I've never had that happon to me...

I remember TIE fighter fondly. I didn't get too far in it. Just didn't care to beat it.

Not through any fault of the game, mind you. Rather because it was too fun to just PLAY. I had far more fun blasting the hell out of my own side's star destroyers by myself in a little TIE Fighter than I did killing the rebel scum.

Flarecobra
05-11-2006, 08:13 PM
Krylo's got a point. Nothing's more fun then pounding a helpless capitol ship after stripping it of weapondry.

Darth SS

He speaks truth.

And FC, I was referring to the few multiplayer games I had. Not fun to be disabled and then have your foe taunt you by stripping your weapons, disabling you, and taking your hull down to do before boarding you.

Buddha Fett

I agree man, being disabled sucks balls.

The only thing that is more embarassing is being taken out by your own concussion missile.

I didn't like how capital ships had specific turrets on them that could be destroyed.

Yes, I'm sure the seven turrets on that Star Destroyer are representative of the sixty turbolasers, sixty ion cannons, and the probably hundred+ lesser weapons on the 1.6-or-so kilometer long vessel (which never seemed that big in the games).

Watch some of the shuttles as they pull close. The proportions are WAY off.

I skimmed through the thread and I didn't see anyone mention X-Wing Alliance. It was the third installment to the series. It's eight years old, but it still looks beautiful; I would suggest it to anyone who likes TIE Fighter or X-Wing. I'm not sure about how available it is these days, though.

Flarecobra

It's been mentioned quite a number of times. Look through it again, or use the "Search this thread" feature.

Indeed.
And I also "like" how the dreadnaughts don't even look like proper dreadnaughts (different model/design is used in the games).

But the games were still very fun. I hear that Empire at War or whatever it is called allows for the control of various ships (as well as ground forces), so maybe I'll look into that at some point.

Allow me to control fleets of Star Destroyers of varying class, and I will be happy. Allow me to pilot my favourite fighters again, and I will be elated. Allow me to give orders to Darth Vader as one of my wingmen, and I will giggle again.

I've always loved the X-wing games, I always get a kick out of playing multiplayer games in XWA, dogfighting in a TF or TI. Playing in the competitions was always fun, 'tis a shame that most of them are dead, there's only one still alive that i can think of off the top of my head and thats for XvT.

My favourite one would have to be XWA, I always felt I had more control over what I was doing than in XvT or TIE. Although TIE is still a great game it just seemed too slow compared to the others.

It would be great if LA made another X-wing game, but it doesn't look like thats gonna happen, the closest you'll get now is the upgrade packs for XWA or the hundreds of custom missions you'll find on the internet. The closest thing to a new X-wing game that I know of, is Imperial Alliance, which is based on the FreeSpace 2 engine, but its not finished yet.

Flarecobra

Well, in Empire at War, it's more like a Command and Conquer or Empire Earth style of control. Sorry Syn.
