By what --

*After a moment of laughter*
...maybe it was just a coincidence. Imagine, one of my most favorite minor characters... I mean, surely that can't be. Vargus isn't really that rare a name, or at least Vargas isn't.

There was, however that incidence of sword-chucks in Everquest (1 or 2, I'm not sure, they both suck). Brian could've sued for plagiarism, but then the whole comic might come under scrutiny by Sony for use of Square-Enix characters (Sony still owns most of Square-Enix right?). Needless to say the two mighty giants, seeing that they both stood to lose out in this conflict, snorted some crude epithets at each other and awkwardly shuffled away.

I'm sure it's a coincidence. For one thing, the 8BT Vargus is human and not a blacksmith.

but he is a encourager/maker of fine warriorrs, right? so if you think about it, or rather, don't, all vargus is is a blacksmith of the warriors mind. right?

That sounds like RM convincing Thief to put all his skill in pickpocketing. :p

Also, Don't forget Hadoken Swiftstrider, a Tauren NPC in the village in feralis. I forget what his function is, but his name always seemed kinda suspicious to me.

I mean honestly, where else have you heard the name 'Hadoken'?

Am I the only one who thinks Vargus doesn't seem to be a normal tauren name? And in one of my RPGs I had a guy named Zeranium. One year later, in radiata stories, there's a guy named Zeranium.

A lot of fantasy names are just made to sound interesting. There are only so many phonetic variations people can come up with. World of Warcraft is known for references to other games thouh. Un' goro crater is swimming with Nintendo references, like Muigin and Larion, Linken (Need to get him Linken's Sword of Mastery, wears green, and talks very little) and apes that drop barrels.

On the planet of Kashyyk in Star Wars Galaxies, there's an Ithorian named Dr. Farnsworth. He wears little glasses and a blue-pajamas-ish outfit. Blatent Futurama reference, anyone? There's also a hunter quest NPC that goes on a Pure Pwnage "boom! headshot!" spazzout. Every game has some type of references, you look at WC3 and it's brimming with them.

Yeah, its a coincidence, Vargus isnt really to say COMMON, but in certain games, who knows?

Like me randomly coming up with the name : "Sarusta."

...what?

Also in FF6 you fight a master Monk known as Vargas

I dunno... look at what he's saying. Maybe it's just me, but somehow, the tired exasperation and worn-out assumption that who he's speaking to is an idjit sounds familiar.

And the leap from warrior to blacksmith seems pretty logical to me. It's either a very subtle slip-in, or, yeah, just a coincidence.

Whoa, hold on there. Last night I was looking up the origin of the name Vargus because it would not stop popping up in different places I go.

"Vargus" turns out to be a clan that originated from Scottish ancestry. The name came off the name "MacFergus", meaning "son of Fergus", and there is in fact a few -- a few Vargus families in the United States. Fergus, which Vargus is a variant of, means fear (man) plus gus (power, force). Vargus basically means the same thing because it is a variant of Fergus.

So there you have it. Vargus is a Scottish clan.

Strange, I thought Vargas was a pretty common Spanish name.

Speaking of funny names in WoW, notice the Darkshore fisherman called Bubber Glump? Named after the Bubba-Gump fishing corporation I suppose. :)

"Vargas" means something about "slope" or "downhill". "Vargus" comes off Fergus. There seems to be a major difference, despite the one-letter thing...

Which also means that the Scottish accent our own Master Vargus has suits him quite well...Want an image of the Vargus crest?
Don't ask how I know this stuff despite how little I'm supposed to know. I'm odd that way.
