View Full Version : Editing in text, deletes text

Sometimes when I try to edit back into the body of my message, if I delete something, when I try to retype it, it won't insert, but start to replace the text. I consider this a bug, because most of the time, it simplys makes the room. The only way I have to fix it if I have a problem is type it down at the bottom of the message, than copy/paste it into the appropriate area. Then it replaces the highlighted area.

What, if anything, is wrong here? I'm so confused.

EDIT: Yeah it's kinda old and runs on Windows 98'. But it was given, so begger's can't be choosers. Thanks for the help.

It's most likely something wrong with you browser or computer, as opposed to the forum itself.

This used to happen to me a lot with my old computer running Internet Explorer. Also used to happen, occassionally, in .txt documents on that old piece of shit.

To fix it you can just close the window and come back to start over (or do the copy paste-y thing, if that's easier for you).

This might actually be more of a keyboard thing. Try hitting the "Insert" key, chances are you've hit it by accident.

Also possible. Never used to work with my old computer. Of course it COULD have been the keyboard of that computer having a faulty insert key too, now that I think about it.

Erm, I think Chicago was more refering to he accidenlty pressed insert, changing edit mode to Replace instead of add new spacing... although I cant seem to get it to work here...

Used to happen to me on MSN a fair bit

Krylo was also referring to the Insert key on the keyboard.

Krylo was also referring to the Insert key on the keyboard.
Happens to me too sometimes. And it even happens when I'm writing up papers on word. So it probably does have to do with accidently hitting the insert key. Or a faulty insert key.

Sounds a lot like you're hitting the Insert key instead of Delete (unless they're not directly underneath each other on your keyboard*), but I tried it and it doesn't quite work out. Chances are it is the insert key, but try and recreate the situation, noting down the steps.

*Since that sounds like I'm being sarcastic - they are on German keyboards.

Delete is actually just to the right of insert on american keyboards, and backspace is to the left with a slight space. It's kinda hard to hit insert on accident, to be honest, unless you're using the number pad's delete.

Actually, Delete is directly under Insert on most keyboards (reference (http://www.penticoff.com/nb/kbds/nbkeynumbers.htm), MS keybaord image (http://images.betanews.com/albums/60/314.jpg), basic Dell keyboard (http://images.moditory.com/reviews/Dell/MVC-003F.JPG) (closer (http://www.wetradegallery.com/images/DCP_0015.JPG))). These are how most Amercian/British keyboards are made. It is very easy to accidentally hit one or the other with this placement.

However, there are the ones that place the six keys in two columns of three as opposed to two rows of three. I believe the two keys are next to one another, regardless.

The number pad places a second Delete key to the right of a second Insert key. I believe that's what krylo was referring to. I've concluded based on observation whenever I inadvertently turn on Overwrite, it's because I somehow overreached and struck this Insert key while pounding the right arrow.

It helps to watch out for that.

My apologies, then, Krylo, if the conversation was oriented toward the number pad portion of the keyboard and not the editing cluster above the arrow keys as I was discussing. The mentioning of the backspace key, however, leads me to think that the latter was the reference, not the number pad cluster. Regardless, it's not unlikely to hit the wrong key by accident, and being kicked into Overwrite mode is annoying in almost every case.

Actually, I was talking about both (thus the being just to the right with a space from the backspace button).

I just forgot that delete key because I don't think I've ever used it, nor seen anyone use it. What, with backspace doing the same thing plus backspacing and being easier to reach...
