Character counters

Okay, possibly bad idea, but I'm going to try anyway. As anyone who's seen my signature has noted, it's not exactly short. I've seen others like it. Not many, but they're there. I think mine's somewhere in the 450+ region. I'd like to propose a character counter so people with similar signatures can tell when they've hit their limit. These character counters would also be helpful when a person had a decent lengthed URL to put in their signature so they could tell as soon as they put in the URL if their 500 character limit had been reached. I can't point you in a direction for one, but I can at least try to send you on the quest. Besides, it's not like I'm asking for a dire rat tail. mmmm...Rat tail soup....

That would be an exceptionally complicated and tricky bit of code to do. It's best to go with the old trial and error method, really.

Anything that shows up too long anyway just looks unsightly and would probably be requested to be taken down. Then again, people can just decrease size and that'd help things look neater too. Maybe I'm just fussy.

I'd consider it, but it does seem like it would only benefit one or two people so it'll be one of those things we do when we run out of other things to do.

As long as we're on this topic, I'll point out how I minimize the space my sig quotes take up.

It's simple -- just don't insert lines between the tags and the text. I'll show you a screenshot of mine, sans color tags and stuff:

All that's one line, but it wraps around.

I often have trouble running into the character limit, but it doesn't look like it, because I like to use the smallest font size in my sig. Perhaps we could somehow change the default font size in sigs to the smallest one? It'd condense them up so much better.

But then those people who don't need much in their signatures, such as myself, wouldn't have a need for it to be smaller. It's just a case of knowing when it looks ridiculous and using your better judgement.
