Post your arguements for why you think any particular anime is the bestest! or perhaps post a (non-flamming) rebuttal as to why you disagree.
you can still make individual posts about any particular anime, but if its to talk about why you think its the best anime ever, please confine it to this thread.

I think Outlaw Star is my choice. It was philosophical in between the death and destruction, and the animation is some of the best I've seen. Plus this is the series that gives us Twilight Suzuka. You can't mess with a female assasin who kills with a wooden sword.

Outlaw Star felt like a weak predicessor to Cowboy Bebop. The fight scenes in Outlaw were pretty boring and tame, except for the Star's missle counter-measures. Cowboy Bebop however has perhaps the greatest fight scene of all time in the Vicious vs. Spike duel at the end.
Also CB far outstrips OS in terms of philosophical impact, yet presents it in a fully integrated way.
that being said, CB isn't my favorite anime.

My favorite anime movie would be Spriggan. It has the best animation I've ever seen, great action, compelling storyline, and a pretty interesting take on biblical philosophy. A standard by which all other anime should be judged by.

I think Berserk would be my choice. I loved it because:
1. It had characters that just seemed...real. They possessed strength and skill within a believable margin of actual human ability. They achieved great feats that seem both possible and plauisble considering their backgrounds. Gatsu trained his entire life to have the ability to swing his 8-foot sword and the skill to kill demons. Griffith's rise to power had less to do his skill with a rapier, and more to do with who he was as a person (a charismatic philosopher in a largely uneducated society). Even secondary characters and minor villians seem to possess a unique quality to them that makes them stick out.
2. Demons act like fricken' demons. They don't kid around. They're evil and they know it. And the way they kill is both terrifying and marvelous. Just as a true demon should be.
3. The setting was dead-on perfect. The fantasy setting doesn't come off as fake in anyway. Peasants act like peasants, nobles act like nobles, soldiers die like soldiers (since that's what the majority of them do), and it all fits together so well that Berserk's setting comes off as its own.
4. What happens at the end (can't spoil it for you guys), is both unexpected and horrifying, but at the same time completely believable. It keeps your interest going throughout and shocks the hell out of you. I only wish they'd have shown more of what happened after where the anime ends, so I wouldn't have to read the mangas online.
There are many other things I love about this anime, but I think I'll just stop right here.

Naruto.

My favourite is Slayers, although I would hesitate before calling it the best. Oh well, I'm also a fan of the Ultimate Teacher so perhaps quality anime isn't necessarily what I gravitate towards. ;)
Bonus points if you know what The Ultimate Teacher is.

I gotta go with Hellsing. I dunno how many of you guys have seen that series, but it is *awesome*. Any show with a Vampire that works for an organization that hunts down and kills vampires is goodness :D

Naruto is cute, Rurouni Kenshin is awesome, Hellsing is incredible - and way too short and abruptly ending, .hack//SIGN is probably great but I only saw five episodes, and Spirited Away is very good, but also totally overwhelmingly weird. I won't say what I think is best because I am essentially a noob.

Evangelion is good. A definite must for everyone.

Hey... Anderson is pretty damn cool, and all of the battles, not only those involving Alucard, are freakin' awesome... I also can't help but claim that Walter and Seras have their extreme moments of being awesome (or something... I'm not particularly literate at midnight [my time])

It really depends, because I haven't seen any one Anime excel over everything else.
In terms of Directing and Writing, I'd probably say the best I have seen is either Neon Genesis Evangelion or Slayers.
Something I do want to mention though is the Anime series I have seen with the best Ending in my opinion is CardCaptor Sakura. The second movie of the series ends the 70 episode series so perfectly...
But since this thread seems more like a 'favorite' anime thread and not what you think is the best, I'll just say that my Favorite show is either CardCaptor Sakura or Slayers. And for movies, Laputa, Porco Rosso and Whisper of the Heart (all Miyazaki).

I was always a fan of InuYasha myself, my first introduction to it being about four years ago when I read Animerica and saw a picture of a little kitsune (Shippou-chan) and thought to myself "Kya! How cuuuuuuute! I've gotta see this!" and went out and bought my very first manga.... just to see the brat fox :p But as I read the manga I learned just how deep it really was, and started watching the show when they decided to air it on CN. Then I started to download the episodes online to watch (Japanese subbed... none of the dubbed stuff). Now I have almost every episode made.
The storyline of course isn't believable or whatever. I mean, who honestly can say they've jumped in a well and gone back to feudal Japan and fought youkai? It has enough drama to keep you sitting on the edge of your seat, but enough humor (one of my favorite scenes has to be when InuYasha comes to Kagome's time and sits on the windowsill outside one of her classes... She notices him sitting there scratching his ear like a dog and freaks... all you people who know InuYasha knows what happens next..), and of course a bit of romance for all you soft-hearted people out there.
But then again, who could even argue with it, seeing as how it is a Rumiko Takahashi manga/anime? ;)

My favorite anime is a three way tie between Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Big O. I'm far from an expert on Anime, so I really can't analyse each for what distingishes them from other animes. All I know is that I saw Trigun on VHS a friend of mine had, and liked it, and while I was waiting for it to come on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, I ran into Big O and Cowboy Bebop, and decided I liked them too.
Overall, I'd guess I'd have to go with Cowboy Bebop if I had to pick ONE. Great stuff; fight scenes are, I have to admit, better than Trigun or Big O. That first episode has a really action-filled shot of the fight from the woman's perspective as she is aiming her gun. I saw that and I thought: Aw, hell yeah, I'm watching this from now on.

Trigun
1)Realistic characters, we can really understand why Vash won't kill a soul, and why Milly appears almost retarded but she develops throughout the story into a deepr character. Things like that make good characterization.
2)Story. Watch it. it's only 26 episodes, yet for some reason, it doesn't seem like you need anymore than that.
3)Action, oh boy! The action! The fighting scenes are cool, especially with Vash working around killing people and managing to do more damage that way. hahaha, silly Vash.
Hamtaro is cute.

As far as best overall anime, i would probably go with Cowboy Bebop; It's got the right mix of action, humor, and philosophical goodness. Not to mention some very memorable characters.
For favorite anime i would have to go with Full Metal Panic or Vandread (1st and 2nd stages). Although i hold a special place for the El Hazard series's since that's what first got me into manga and then anime.

HELLSING!!!!!
Definitely beats all others on music, Fight scenes are better than bebop, not like that's saying much ::chuckles.:: Gotta hand it to bebop, Le Fou was an awesome character concept ::gives props to bebop::
Hellsing, also, in manga form, has nazis, which as everyone knows adds twenty bonus points, because nazis are way evil, and therefor, cool.

Berserk. Hands down. It doesn't have the sweetest animation, but in every other regard it rules the board.
I'm not disagreeing with anyone on this. By and large, most of the anime suggested is outstanding (thank you for not being serious about the Pokemon crack). However, there are some others that definitely strike my fancy, like RahXephon, Escaflowne, Full Metal Panic, Record of Lodoss War, Bastard!!!, GTO... the list goes on. I did notice that there was not one mention of Evangelion yet. Five years ago, I'd have posted that as the best, but I've matured a bit since then. It's still good, but just not the dominating force it was.
...Dadgum, I'm getting long-winded. I'll shut up now.

Well, I don't think I'd call any anime I've seen "the bestest ever" because I've seen a whole lot of really really good anime.
My favorite anime, hands-down, is Haibane Renmei. This series is absolutely gorgeous. And the storyline, oh the storyline ends up so wonderfully well, after slowly turning on you throughout the series. The first several episodes seem overall pretty lighthearted, though there are hints of darkness ahead throughout them. And then the series gets dark, without being depressing, or messing with your head at all. And at the beginning, you have no clue what's going on, and by the end, all your questions you had at the beginning don't matter anymore because it's just all-around so incredibly cool. Some people might think it's a bit slow...it's certainly no fighting anime. But it has a great deal of characterization, which is quite possibly my favorite thing to see in an anime.
Other really good animes which I enjoy quite a bit include Lain, Neia_7 (both of those, with Haibane Renmei, involve the work and ideas of Yoshitoshi ABe, whom I greatly admire), Cowboy Bebop, Eva (the series, not the movies), Trigun, the Lodoss War OVA, Escaflowne, Grave of the Fireflies, the Kenshin OVA, Voices of a Distant Star, Only Yesterday (and most other Studio Ghibli films I've seen), and my list goes on. Oh, and for perhaps the best cliff-hanger ending to an episode that I've ever seen, I have to put Battle Athletes on there.

My favorite anime, the one that got me hooked on all the other anime, was Happy Lesson, so I'm goin to vote for that, after that i would have to say Love Hina.

I can still remember when I thought DBZ was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now I'm older and I know that Dragonball was way better!
I remember that time too, then i found some other animes and realized that DBZ is complete crap. Dragonball and GT are way better than DBZ. But that's only if you like the dragonball shows.
Love Hina, Vandread, Nadesico, Full Metal Panic, Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop. Those are all better than DB, DBZ, and DBGT.....but that's cause i like sci-fi.

ok. Hellsing is just plain awesome. Berserk is friggin cool. Neon-Genesis Evangilion (I cant spell!!) is breath-takingly awesome. The Dragonball series is ok... if you a new commer to anime.. X is .. different .. But my favourite is .. Neon-Genesis, hands down
Rurouni Kenshin - I don't think any show ever has kept my attention longer than the Battousai. I have all 90 some odd episodes, seen them all. Beautiful Anime. Anyone out there got Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin's prequel series) on DVD? Been trying to find it.

I can't pick just one, so I'll give a top 5 series and movies.
Top 5 Series:
1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Escaflowne
3. .Hack//Sign
4. Hellsing
5. Excel Saga
Top 5 Movies:
1. Spirited Away
2. Princess Mononoke
3. Cowboy Bebop Movie
4. Vampire Hunter D
5. Grave of the Fireflies
Hmmm, my favourite usually depends on what I'm watching at the moment, how I feel emotionally at the time. Right now my favourite would be Samurai Deeper Kyo. I hate going into explanations about why I like things but I feel obligated to point out the reasons:
1./Interesting plot development. Although I've only seen untill episode 14, it seems fairly clear without giving away too much of the storyline. So as to be somewhat complicated without being confusing.
2./Interesting characters. I'd have to say Kyo is one of the coolest characters I've yet seen in an anime. (Although secondary to the legendary Priss Asagiri, of course that goes without saying.)
3./Historical accuracy/inaccuracy. I liked the fact that with the DVDs they give a brief historical record of alot of the characters and events in the show that actually, historically speaking, happened.
4./Timeline. I love the Era of Warring States, so that fits in nicely.

This is hard, its a 5 way tie between trigun, one peice, neon genesis evangilion, hellsing and ruroni kenshin. the reason hellsing is so cool are the fight scenes and of course Alucard. The rest of them its pretty much they all have great characters and a good balance between action and comedy, just good fun watchin.

Another one that's definitely worth mentioning is Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances, as it's known here in the states). Don't get me wrong, I'm a hardcore action junkie when it comes to anime, but the characters and story of Kare Kano just suck you in and don't let go. There is no action in this series, which is somewhat surprising, as it comes from the makers of Evangelion. Still, the sheer depth of the characters keeps you interested in the story, and the little bits of humor thrown in (you actually get more jokes if you've seen Evangelion first), make this particular series more than worth watching. And no, I'm not someone trying to sell it, either. It's just good. But if you don't like anime with more depth than, say, DBZ, don't watch it, because you'll only be wasting your time/money.

My personal favourite is Magic Knight Rayearth. The middle tapes in the box set are a tad repeatative/predictable, but the opening set is good, and the ending was awesome. But I have a lot of other "favourites" as well, including Slayers, Ranma, Naruto, Love Hina, and Maison Ikkoku (the Graphic Novels RULE!).
Among the fairly unpopular anime that I like, there's Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. I've seen in maligned among many anime fans, but I thought it had a unique and entertaining brand of humour. Just make sure you watch it subtitled....
1. Hack//Dusk
2..Hack//sign
3. Final Fantasy Unlimited (Cid is so cool! And Chobil too)
4. Get Backers
5. Gundam Seed
6.Gundam X
7.D.N.Angel
8.Yami No Matsuei
9. Naruto
10.Hikaru no Go
11. Dragon Drive
12.One Piece
13. Shaman King (Takehito Koyasu *swoons*)

Has anyone here seen Martian Successor Nadesico? I have to say, that's a really good anime. It's got humor, great characters, and an inspired plot. I love all the little twists and turns it takes. Martian Successor Nadesico really knows when to make fun of itself and when to be serious.
I'll also mention Escaflowne. Really, if you haven't seen this series, you should... it's one of the great classics.
It's impossible for me to say what the "best" anime series is, since everyone has their own tastes, but I can guarantee that just about anybody who likes anime will enjoy those two series.

Esca is great. But I havent seen the Martian one.. Ill have to look into that one.
Nadesico is great, but it's mostly a parody. Although the story does have it's serious issues and serious plot. It's so mishmashed with comedy you can't really take it seriously. Especially since it's directly attacking the Otaku with the Gai Daigoji character.

Well, Nadesico was the collection of 11 very famous Anime wirters and a famous director so alot of it is going to be similar feeling (and alot was purposefully put in as parody). But yeah, I've only seen up to 8 of Nadesico so far but it is great so far. And for a show with so much comedy, like Slayers, it has some DAMN good dramatic plot points (all the people on mars in episode 5 and Guy's big scene in the end of episode 2). Damn...

Ok since I really like alot of anime I will list my five most hated of ALL TIME.
coming in at number 1 is of course Pokemon! (lots of critters, critters burn good!)
number two would be Digimon (more Critters!!)
three would be yu gi oh! (its a marketing excersise if ever I saw one!)
four would be Medabots (seriously can you get any more twee?)
and at the bottom of the list and least hated would be DBZ (I only hate it cos they talk to much)
there are probably still more I am yet to find out that are terrible but for the moment my favorite would be either Hellsing or Full Metal Panic! (Sosuke is in need of a reality check!)

Well... I don't know if it's the best ever, but FLCL/Furi Kuri/Fooly Cooly (depending on what you like to say) is my favorite, and definately deserves a mention. It's one of the most amusing things I've ever seen, and (if you refuse to watch subs for the sake of your eardrums like me [see 'I love dubs']) you'll notice that the dubbing is great. I love the voice for Haruko, Naota, Etc. Of course, the action is great, but this is from Gainax so that's to be expected. Granted, it's mostly a giant parody with a plot put over it... but that's why I enjoy it.
Also... as far as Inuyasha goes... it just seems like a very 'cookie cutter' anime to me. All the characters seem rather stereotypical, (Miroku = the pervert, Kagome = the confused school girl, Inuyasha = the 'I wish I was a badguy', The chick with the boomerang (can't remember her name) = the tough/frigid girl, etc.) and the plot becomes cyclical after awhile (Inuyasha and kagome get close. Enter koga or kikyo. One or the other gets jealous. They cool off. They get close. Enter koga or kikyo. Repeat until end of time, and toss in sesshomaru or whatever the shapeshifter's name is for fighting.) Over all... the only thing I like about the show is Sesshomaru, and he's not around nearly enough.
Cowboy Bebop, Kenshin, Princess Mononoke, Slayers, Hellsing, and just about every other anime I've seen mentioned here are all great as well, though.

FLCL. Very fun. I also loved Excel Saga (poor little Menchi! Doorknobs sure suck, eh?)
However, I love Cowboy Bebop the most out of all because you get so into the characters. Sure, Vash, Merril, and Millie are fun as well as deep, but you don't come to know and love them as well as Spike, Jet, Faye, Ed, and Ein. I got all teary eyed at the end of Bebop, almost cried <Tragic, and ironic...> so, My vote is for Bebop as best anime around. Sure its mainstream, but it's mainstream for a reason.
For comedy, however, Excel and Slayers are tied for second, with the Great Teacher in the top slot. (He won by swimming the whole way underwater.)
And yes, I have seen a lot of Inuyasha. It's fun alright...

FLCL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love that anime. I especially like the parts when they go into magna format on episode 1+6 why did they olney have six episodes? it was a good show.
My other choice is cowboy bebop, realistic and it has guns! Bang bang! your dead!

Hmm... I think Kenshin is my favourite Anime... I love the voices, emotion and story of it. Although I hate the dubbed... Go subbed! <cheers>
Anyway, a close contender is Cowboy Bebop. The animation is great, and you can relate to the characters, and really feel for them. Bah! I hate the ending though...

Best anime ever is probably Grave of the Fireflies. It's not funny, it doesn't have giant mecha, it doesn't have amazingly cool fight sequences, but it is the only anime I know which literally changed my life. I used to take my life for granted... now I treasure each day that I have.

One correction... it was probably a typo on your part. The cuts scene were from 'manga' format. As far as the length... correct me if I'm wrong... the show only runs as far as the manga does. (since a majority of anime is based off of their comic versions)

Okay, the best anime...in my opinion (mainly cause it is my favorite)...is SoulTaker. For those of you who have not seen this show, check out Anime Unleashed, it may have it on there sometime. I stayed up and watched all 26 episodes in the series and loved it to death!!!
This series is one that keeps you guessing, and when you think you have finally figured it out, it makes you guess again. Not only that, but even though it has some fighting in the series, it is not the focus of the story. Kyoske Dante is trying to find flickers of his sister, and finds out some strange stuff is going on with his family. I say no more. Check it out yourself.

The best I've seen has been mentioned by a bunch of people already: Cowboy Bebop. The character, plot, and humor were just simply awesome.
I enjoyed Trigun and Fooly Cooly as well.
And I think I need to see if I can get my hands on some of these others that were mentioned.
I gotta agree with Dante about Grave of the Fireflies. Not my favourite anime, but I've never seen one better. I highly recommend everyone watch this once, but bring a box of tissues, even if you're a manly macho man.

I not only greatly enjoyed Trigun, but it also changed my world-view in regards to death and killing. Slayers is a fun frolic in a quasi-DnD world (quite fun). Rorouni Kenshin, on the other hand, while humorous at times, maintains a serious mood and delivers a dramatic story of love, courage, and some kick-ass fighting. These three are the best anime that I have ever seen. They are ruined by dubbing. (Subs only!!) totemo kakoii ne.

I'm a relative newb to Anime, but I like, in no particular order...
1) Ranma 1/2. Hilarious.
2) Love Hina. Also hilarious. Both of these have people trying to figure out their emotions, too, so it's not all slap-stick.
3) Tenchi. Muyo, Universe, OVA, whatever, it's my brother's.
4) Princess Mononoke. It's not a straight-up "let's kill the bad guys". It's got man vs. nature, man vs. self, man vs. man. Not man as in male, man as in humanity. Even man vs. SUPERnature. Fun.
5) .hack//sign. I've seen maybe 4 episodes, but they were so close to EQ I couldn't get enough of it.
6) Castle in the Sky
7) Sprited Away. Confused me more than the Matrix the first time I saw it, but a few re-sees have helped a lot.
8) Ai Aori Yoshi (sp?). Cool, for me, and it doesn't matter if it's dubbed or subbed, since it's THE SAME THING! Man, I love that part.
<EDIT-sp corrections...matters for Anime>

my two favs were princess mononoke and hellsing. princess monoke had great characters, a great "world" and was very thoughtfull anime, there was no real "villain" or no real "hero". each "side" had its own evil qualities, each one had a redeeming aspect, it really made me think (as much as anime can, i just think the drawing is cool). Hellsing had a cool concept, cool drawing and lots of blood. simple testosterone trip. oh, and seras was wicked hot. The biggest disapointment to me was outlaw star. it had such a great concept, it could have been the best of all time, but it seemed like the makers got lazy a few episodes into it.

The Irresposible Captain Tylor
Best japanese animated television series ever. And for only one season too.
It's got humor on several levels.
There is a moral or life-lesson to each episode.
You can even find socio-philosophical debates within the show.
And never at any point of the series do things seem to "drag on".
And the dub is actually pretty good as well.
Another "Diamond in the Rough" would be the PATLABOR television series. Heartwarming and humorous, it doesn't focus on choreographed mech-battles, but rather on long-term character interaction.
And more people should watch the HERE IS GREENWOOD mini-series. It might hit closer to home than you imagine. Or GOLDEN BOY, for some belly-aching sexy humor. Or KEY THE METAL IDOL, for a surreal yet realistic experience. (as opposed to LAIN which is realistic surrealism >_<)
Gah. I feel old.
-=PakoPako=-
And everyone who has or hasn't heard of GREAT TEACHER ONIZUKA, you owe it to yourself to watch the Live-Action series (only 12 or 13 episodes).
It's actually funnier and more heart-rendering than the animation (which came after the live-action), probably because it seems more realistic. Though I do miss the GERMAN SUPLEXES.

I would have to say my ABSOLUTE favorite is The Slayers
(Slayers)
1) I love it because It has a FANTASTIC setting. The beauty of a culture just setting up, a BIT before/into the time of guns and that kind of weponry. The third season shows the times changing, how magic had become obsoleate, it made me sad. And how, no matter how bad the situation Lina Inverse remained upbeat and cheerful, the people looking for adventure, find it, humor, find it, agust, find it, and a bit of romance ( I personally diagree with the cannon pairing though.) My personal favorite line in ALL of the series "Life is a big bright flower!" - Lina Inverse
2) Princess Mononke, this like Slayers has new and deeper meanings to it everythime I see it!
3) Inu-Yasha, found the series when the first manga came out, Fell in love. Collected 1-15. Complained when they changed my cover. Yeah, not quite a Die Hard, but soon, sooon! Btw is 16 out or is that just a visous rumor to haunt me?
4) Sorry,Tenjin Matsukaru, but,Yu-Gi-Oh! I know it's a Pokemon (may they die slow and fiery deaths) replacement, but lil' Yugi is SOOOO CUTE!

there is one thing, and one thing ONLY, that i ask for japanese cartoons ported to america: HIRE SOME GOOD AMERICAN LINGUISTS! translation isnt the issue, but rather the use of slang and cultural differences in anime that cause some very odd moments. That's another reason why i like Babop so much: because its been thouroughly americanized enough that those oddmoments dont exist. Plus, Tank rocks :D (best themesong, ever)

this is quite a difficult topic... i mean just look at all the anime out there and your head bursts at the mere thought of understanding all of the story lines. take for example Cowboy Bebop... its a great show, very funny, with lots of killing and stuff. then you have Inuyasha... also a good show with its slight humor, but what keeps me coming back is the fights scenes. two words- boo yah. and dothacksign... well its very confusing. all ive gotten out of it is some people go in comas or something. but its good. blue gender... decent. for an anime show its pretty darn good. big o... thats a good show. very well done art and the story line just makes me wanna watch all of them. dragonball... also very good. very funny. but the anime that takes the cake is Rurouni Kenshin. I cant last the week without my kenshin. it is by far the best anime ever. it is funny with a great story line. plus the way kenshin talks is awkward but entertaining. but Kenshin definitely is great all the way.

Well above all with the character profiles, fighting scenes, mass destruction i'd say that that puts evangalion on top but i think that it is way to messed up for my tastes. I think that my favorite anime would have to be the most recently developed macross ZERO. It mixes top of the line computer graphics with the best anime drawing out there. Macross hasnt been updated in soooo long so this series is a breath of fresh air into the series. The mechs are AWSOME, battle scenes have lots of action with no missed frames that are truly noticible and there is even a nude scene. I give it two HUGE thumbs up!

Ah. But see, I'm only really bugged about the dumb ones. Samurai Jack is more of a nod to the whole style than it is a cheap effort to cash in on the fame. It was around only a little after DBZ started airing. By the way, DBZ was my first anime. I saw it one day after school, the ep right before Piccolo dies on earth, and I just thought "Whoa. This is amazing... completely different than anything I've ever seen before... Incredible..."
And it just stemmed from there.
No, really, I find Samurai Jack to be pretty okay. It goes into the anime-ish zones of swords, action style, and scene transition without marring it, the way other recent series do.
Nah. What angers me is all this crappy mimicry. Transformers Armada is just pissing on the corpse of what the Autobots and Deceptacons used to be... back in the day...
And SD Gundam. Lord. Sunrise has lost a lot of my support with this. I was one of those guys who loved the original Gundam, and Gundam Wing was better: Politics, science, hella explosions. But this... this is betrayal.
Red Villain Guy: "Noooo! This can't be happening, argh, why, no!"
Token Wide-Eyed Kid Who's Now Special Because of Friendship and Other Crap: "Wowww! Yay, yippie!"
I think, then, it comes down to this: Can an American animation company/crew make a good action series while avoiding cliche? That's the key. And by cliche, I mean that inherent flaw that's mostly invisible with this age's technology: The Talkie.
Matrix Style.
The Talkie is everywhere. You hear it when you are masochistic enough to watch Pokemon. You see it when a character's mouth becomes larger than his or her head. You can see the Talkie when an animated persona fits an entire paragraph of dialogue into one open, vibrating-mouthed speech, usually with over-exaggerated sweat drops and fancy backgrounds. The Talkie is all around you. It holds you in bondage, insulting your intelligence.
Stephen King Style
In the cold, confused epoch of the late eighties, there emerged a new style, a new kind of entertainment. Japanese Import. Along with it, however, lurking like a cancer, there soon was seen an ancient evil: Overtalk.
In America, a misfitted crew of young linguists, animators, and video editors did a good thing. Maybe even a great thing. They conquered an evil that seemed to plague their world, and they stood and were True.
All that was six years ago.
Now, the evil is back, and being fed directly into the television sets of the young and impressionable offspring of the survivors. What the world needs now is a gunslinger.
*end ranting*.
Sometimes being an anime fan makes me die a little inside... Then I watch some Love Hina or Outlaw Star... and it's better.
Mmm. Macross. I hearken back to the days of Macross II.

I guess I mean that it depends on how much of a purist you are. I'm open to Americans using the style, if they can pull it off. Hell, look at Madureira and Ramos. They do the most amazing comic work I've seen: Battle Chasers? Freaking awesome.
Rurouni Kenshin. Itīs as simple as that.
I saw the entire serie a few years ago on bad .rm files. Like 40Mb per episodes.
But yet, I fell in love. (Well, not in love, as in with Kenshin. But I really liked the serie.)
I'm now watching the entire serie again, but this time on my newly bought DVDs. And it's still as great, even thought I know what's gonna happen.
As people already have said.
It's great comedy when it wants to be funny.
It holds great drama, when it's time to get serious.
The animation is very good.
Simple, there isn't much to complain about.
(Note: Rurouni Kenshin: Seisouhen, aka. Samurai X: Reflections, is NOT official Kenshin. The original creator did not even want it to be made, it has nothing to do with the original anime!)
- Naruto -
I really like Naruto too, it feels a little more exciting since it still airs and you don't know what will happen. (Maybe unless you've read the Manga, but I haven't.)

Unfortunately, their selection of Anime is outdated, mis-sorted, and kinda crappy.
I don't want "Hello Kitty and the Beast". I want to see things like "Gundam W: Complete Operations" and other stuff worth my time and effort. Plus, I'm way to lazy to see if Best Buy takes AmEx cards.
Anyone have a suggestion on a series (preferable) or a movie that could take up some of my free time? (And please tell me why it's worth it; I won't understand 'Bubblegum Crisis, because it's good'.)

The absolute best Anime series I have ever seen has to be Zeta Gundam, we have to wait until later for it's release here in the U.S. I bought the series about a year ago and I just love it. It has action, tragedy, drama... but who wants to hear about that stuff. You can describe a series all day and never get your point across. One thing I like about this show is the fact that you have Char and Amuro fighting on the same side in the war, this series is important (but not necessary) to understand Char's Counterattack (also good). THis show is the Anime equivalent of Hamlet, it is a well written tragedy where everybody dies at the end.
Cowboy Bebop is also spectacular.
Oh, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is the best comedy series ever!
Well those are my top three.
1. Zeta Gundam
2. Cowboy Bebop

The main reason I like Trigun is Vash. I feel as though Vash and I have a lot in comon, from our anti violent tendencies, to our dorky humor. The fact we both have blond hair and bluish green eyes. The fact that when I get tickled I have that funkey laugh. The fact that my girlfreind tells me how Vashlike I am. Next time I get a chance, I'm gonna cosplay as Vash, but not the red trench coat, because thats so overdone. I'm gonna go as Vash durring the one episode where he had long blond hair, regular pants and a white shirt and the coolest pair of suspenders I have ever seen. Even cooler than Faye's, even cooler than Tifa Lockharts'. Anyways, I miss Wolfwood. I had to fight back tears because of his untimly demise, to be perfectly honest, I'm pretty sure I let a few slip though. He was a good man, who died tring do what was right. It made me feel so much, mostly for Milly. But on another note. Cowboy Bebop comes in a close second though. Mostly because of Ed. She is so freaking cool. If I ever have a little girl, I'm going to name her Edward Wong Hau Pepleu Tivusky the 4th, because its so cool. That and Spike man...What can I say about Spike that hasn't been said. He's so corse on the outside, but he's so deep. I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a tear or two when Julia died and a few more when Spike followed her to the after life. But honestly, no other anime has touched me on such an emotional level as these two. No form of media has really.

Well people the best anime out their is (I would have to say on behalf of my opinion) the giever if you ever heard of it its about a kid who takes matial arts classes and one day he was walking home frome school (he is not really a kid he is like 17 years old) and bam a gang comes around the corner and trys to kick his ass the out of no were a mitorite falls from the sky (which is actually some sort of alian bio armour) and the kid runs tword it *gangsters chase after him cuz they are not done talking smack before they beat him up* astonished the kid finds the armour on the ground but to se it did not leave a crater (the armour looks like a round disk with a shiny looking marble in the middle) one of the gangsters catches up and pusses the kid (who was distracted by the shiny looking marble in the middle) onto the ground and the kids head makes contact with the armour *the armour activates most grusomely* it shoots out vine thingys and they wrap around the kids body and eventualy make him into the guiever who is like super fuckin strong and has the armour class of like 100,000,000 *the gangsters look hella scared* then with no tolorence the kid kills every last gangster (12 in all i think)
well thats it the best anime hope you liked my poorly punctuated story
Final Fantasy : Ulimited[ owns your soul.

I won't flame you, I'll just prove you wrong. Square didn't make FFUnlimited, Production I.G. did. However, I do agree with you on one comment you made in the post. Which will forever remain unknown, but assumed by many. -_-
And still, there's no 1 anime that's 'the best'. That's my opinion and I'm keeping it going.
My appologies for that post... I think, i've found that forums and hard spirits mix badly.
My personal favourite, is either Ghost in the Shell, or Genocyber.. I've not seen either for a long time though, so picking out decent reasons why is hard... I suppose 'they both had a better soundtrack than Akira.. but spiceworld had a better soundtrack than Akira (barley).
As for a favourite series.. I realy can't say. Damn tv and it's timing. i usualy don't watch annything if it doesn't start when i hit play, then stop when i hit pause.

I fear I sometimes come down with a case of OCD when presented with a great anime series, when I started watching Kenshin that was all I did besides sleep for about three days.
At any rate, one of the things that to my mind makes a good anime a great anime is the message of the series. Most good animes have one and I like the shows where the meaning of the story (if you will) is woven carefully throughout the series, so the creator never comes out and beats you over the head with it because he doesn't have to.
Over the course of 5 days, I watched Berserk and Irresponsible Captain Tylor pretty much contiguously, and for some reason the underlying morals of those two stories just clicked for me and the next Monday I spoke to the registrar at my university, arranged to take the next year off, and went travelling. So needless to say, those two shows are both special to me.

Yeah! Another Tylor fan. One thing I've noticed is that most of the places that sell Tylor only do so in the form of a box set, something that may be a bit pricy for most fans. I showed Tylor to my brother who just got back form Marine boot camp, and he loved it! I don't quite think I'll go wandering through the widerness being followed by two twin fangirls though. Hmm, nah!
Yes, "Do whatever you want," is an order I have no problem following Captain!
Haven't seen Berserk, is it any good?
Peace Out!

But those are the bad ones I suppose. ^_^ Yeah I loved Outlaw Star. Only seen it censored though x_x. Heard the show was MUCH better uncut, and dirttier too. >_<

Ok, after reading this whole thread I think there is one point that everone can agree on . . .
Hayao Miyazaki makes great anime. Many people said they liked Princess Mononoke, and a few for Spirited Away, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. And his next one is getting made now, Howl's Moving Castle, can't wait. :)
here is a nice site about him and other Studio Ghibli works:
http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/
Anyway, my choice for best anime would be Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. As for my favorite anime I have to go with Cardcaptor Sakura. Of corse I have read more of the manga than I have seen of the anime, so I am combining my experiances. But it taught me a lot about life in general.
And just for something recent I am watching, Full Metal Panic is pretty good as well.

Hi, I'm Nick. I do not fear to tell the truth about anything especially when it comes to a topic I enjoy. It was one of the first animes I ever saw, so it has a special significance to me. All I need is money to buy the series then I shall be able to finally see the whole thing.

Wow, you're in or a treat. However, there are 19 DVDs that make up the show plus the two movies (and a christmas special OAV that has yet to be released so far as I know). Even on half.com where I am trying to buy each disk for 10 dollars approx, if I do get each for 10 dollars, it'll still be 190 bucks... Not a cheap one here. But its one of the few that is worth the perchase of all the DVDs, that's for sure. But you are very lucky indeed to be able to see it for the first time. It just keeps getting better and better all the way to the end (where I still profess the second CCS movie is the best ending I have ever seen for an Anime series).

Yeah the cost is really out there, and I probably will not have enough money for a year maybe half. I will be looking for additional cash flow soon, so I hope to reach my goal a little sooner. But school seems to get in the way a bit with the whole tons of homework, and all my homework subjects seem to stem from Europe. But I hope I can get at least the beginning of the series soon just so I have part of it. Actually I just found like $100+ I hid away and forgot about, but I have to use some of that for a new DVD player so I can actually watch my Anime. My PS2 recently stopped playing all my anime, and just the anime. Weird.

Most of the best animes already were mentioned. But it's never too much saying again that Grave of the Fireflies is the best anime ever.
But my actual favorites are FLCL, because it doesn't make any sense at all on the surface and yet it makes so much sense in so much levels below, and Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star), because it's a really beautiful and intimistic OVA.

The greatest anime I have ever seen, in my opinion, would have to be Ranma 1/2. Even though the story is messed up, and the animation is nowhere near as good as other shows, there's just something about a guy who turns into a girl with just a spleash of water. My friend's friend had the first 6 seasons on Cd and when I first saw it, i went through about a season a day. I spent over a day total watching that show in the first week.

AKIRA!!!!
It presented so many thing common in anime but in such a stylized way it was awesome and highly stylized. The Bike scenes, the ehical questions involved in parts, how cool it looked when Tetsuo started mutating, a post apocoliptic Neo Toky (cause regular Tokyo just isn't cool enough) I could go on for hours.
But for comedy you can't beat Love Hina
Even though not a lot of people know about it in the states let me give you the premise. Keitaro Urashima is in a cram school to try to get into Tokyo U. To blah blah blah. Anyway his grandmother leaves him in charge of Hinita Sou, a former hotel and now ALL FEMALE DORMATORY. So before you start wondering why is this funny let me tell you the char personalities.
1. Innocent little 14 year old girl, great chef
2. Crazy genius 14 year old girl who has built several weird inventions including a giant metal turtle among others. Hits keitaro many times
3. Fellow cram school student has violent tendancy and punches Keitaro many many many many many many many many many times.
4. Fellow cram student, complete spaz.
5. Severe Alcholic, complete flirt
6. 15 year old Kendo master, absolutely hates Keitaro. hits keitaro many times as well
7. Keitaro's Aunt rarely seen, but also hits keitaro
And thats just the main cast

My favorite however is a tough call don't let the name fool you I love Ranma 1/2 it has to be one of my most beloved considering it got me into anime. But my all time favorite is Cowboy Bebop, closely followed by Trigun. If you don't mid my saying the best moment in all of anime to me is the church sequence of Session Five: Ballad of fallen angels.

I can't really put a finger on a best because I have a favorite for every category. Although I would have to say that one on my top ten (they don't have an order, just are my top ten) is Noir. I mean who doesn't like a fourteen year old girl going around killing people with a barrete, forks, toy bus axels, ID cards, swords, popcorn, and ties just to name some. Bounty Hunter anime is always good, well in most cases. I mean the show has absolutely no blood but seems to have a high body count in each episode. And the nuns with guns at the end has to be classic. Why did she have to shot the old man in front of the cat? Why? Poor traumatized kitty. Any way, Nadesico goes pretty high on my top ten too. You have to love Gekiganger. JOOOOEEEEEEE!!!!! Spoofs of giant robot anime are great. If you haven't watched it, do. Seriously, watch it now. I mean right now. Didn't you hear me, NOW!

Ok, I understand where you're coming from. I enjoy the actual explosions, battlecries, and Heero's physcotic laughter after he's blown up two Aries with one shot (I laughed with him). But you have to admit that it's a good way to get the kids hooked on the little stuff and then move them to the big stuff. Plus the show isn't that bad is it? 1. Chibi Gundams is not the correct term. The correct term is "Super Deformed." SD has it's own category. It focuses mainly with robots. Check some "How to Draw __" books and you'll see what I mean.

1. Can we please cut out the endless quoting?!
2. I have to argue the point about GAINAX producing high quality anime, it is not the end all of the industry. To be honest, I think some of the things done in NGE started the industry onto the wrong path. For instnace, the long pauses with no action or dialogue, the improper usage of classical music, and flawed amin characters that should be in institutions rather then set loose on the world inside of giant mecha.
3. Now that I have those two points out of the way, I will make my peace.
Best Anime Movie - People go back and forth between Akira and Grave of the Fireflies. Personally I have to go with Princess Mononoke, great action/romance stroy that has just the right balance of fantasy and humanity.
Best Comedy Series - A lot of people say Love Hina, and others say FLCL. I have no problem with Love Hina, but it falls short of the manga. FLCL... well, it had potential, but it is hard to tell a good story in 6 episodes. I Must go with The Irresponsible Captain Tylor for best comedy, this show has everything.
Best Action Series - Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Samurai X, or Naruto seem to be popular. Overall though, I have to side with Cowboy Bebop, I might have gone with Samurai X, but the Cowboy Bebop: The Movie smokes out the Kenshin movies which mainly just expand on the plot... which at times is pretty boring. Also, I don't know how people can stand .HACK//Sign? That show is so slowly paced, and the movies aren't any better.
Best Mecha Series - There sure are a lot of Gundam fans out there, and I'm one of them. Others like Macross, or Escaflowne. My favorite Mecha series would have to be Zeta Gundam or Gundam 0080 (Breaking the 6 episode rule).
Well, those are my two cents.
Peace Out!

No, folks, I'm still going to sit very heavily on Pet Shop of Horrors being absolutely the best. I mean, okay, I totally admit that Cowboy Bebop has it's great moments. It's beautifully drawn, well voice-acted and the storyline is perfect! I, also, have to agree with Trigun being amazing. Very funny, very neatly done. Neo Genesis Evangelion has to be the all time BEST drawn anime, but Pet Shop of Horrors has all of that and more. Plus, it's so rarely heard of.
It's amazingly drawn, the creatures within the shop are nothing short of spectacular and of course, the Count himself is so perfectly drawn. There are a few cutesy moments to balance out the gore and of course, the realism of the emotions played by the characters. You can really feel their sorrow, grief and loss at losing a loved one or the furious rage that the detective feels at being unable to pin any of the murders on D. Of course, he's a little animated at times, but he's delightful otherwise.
I can't extoll it's virtues enough, with a very down to earth yet supernatural feeling storyline and very unique plots to each episode. I, personally, think it's the most inventive and unique story that I've ever heard of.

I agree with the "Outlaw Star" is not great arguement; Cowboy Bebop came first, and Outlaw Star felt like it was trying to get up to par with it. Outlaw Star was too repetitive in nature to the enemies, where Cowboy Bebop offered virtually a new enemy with its own uniqueness is amost every episode and manga. And there just wasn't enough action.
Hellsing, as much as I liked it at first, became slightly annoying. I realized the fight scenes only happened during the last half of the episode(after the commercial break), so they seemed pushedand forced. Even the last battle should have been more glorious, some kind of gunfight between Arucard(yes, I use the Japanese name) and Incognito.
.hack//SIGN is interesting, but not great. How much can you really do with some person trapped inside an online RPG? The action sequences were too online RPGish, and those get boring, fast.
::Realizes there's 17 pages to this thread, and if he were to go through and find what everyone likes, he'd never get around to posting this::
I'm presuming someone out there likes DragonBall Z the best. DragonBall Z is repetitive: enemy appears, heroes are too weak to take him on alone, some villian from before joins the heroes to take him on, Goku get's uber-powerful and defeats the villian single-handidly, everyone trains, some random side-story, enemy appears, and the cycle starts over. The fight scenes aren't eve anything, anymore: random punches, random kicks, blury attacks, no one can see them except the main characters, random energy attack, huff-and-puff, go at each other again, random punches...all over again. It was fine at first, but after watching the same stuff over and over...it's just not.
Let's see, I have to state Love Hina is the best. It's original, while hitting all the stereotypes of anime. Mecha, magical schoolgirls, perverted old guys and young girls, paty-shots, samurai girl, love story...it's all pesented here in a new, unique fashion. So if you like the old stuff but want to see it in a fresh way, check out Love Hina.
And there's also Cromartie High, which is only in Japan right now. Random humor at a delinquent high school.

Hajime no Ippo is the greatest anime I have ever seen, I'm lazy so check the link for info:

I can't even begin to describe how much I love this series.
A few other notables One Piece, Naruto, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Berserk.

Favorite Movie: Armitage III
-cool story
-awesome animation
-awesome characters
-hot chick!
Favorite Movie 2: Fist of the North Star
-awesome back story, though I felt the characters were a bit weak and one-dimensional
-great fight scenes(put that on frame by frame, man, theres stuff happening that you can't even see!)
-REALLY cool story-- the first time I watched it, my brother skipped the very beginning, saying it was boring, and I didn't like it, I thought it was just a slaughter-fest, but when I watched it in its entirety, I thought it was great
Favorite Series: Trigun
-interesting and engaging characters
-very funny
-good animation (skimped a little on Vash, his arms look odd)
-spectacular action sequences
Favorite Series 2: Full Metal Panic!
-great characters
-humerous subtexts
-SUPER animation
-really, really great story!
thats what I've got to say. Rurouni Kenshin (series) I really liked, but I thought it was repetetive, reminded me of Dragon Ball Z. Bad guy comes, beats a couple people up, Kenshin comes, almost gets killed, wins at last. Of the Rurouni Kenshin movies, I've only seem "Memories" but that was really cool. Escaflowne was nice, but it was a bit cheesy, and strangely animated. I also found some elements of it a bit cliched. Hellsing was SWEET, but why do the chicks boobs change siz all the time? It was a great series, but sometimes it moved along a bit too slowly. Berserk was awesome, but I, unlike Devil Wet His Pants, I did not believe some stuff to be realistic. Has anyone else heard rumors that they're going to make a conclusion to Berserk? Apparently, they had to cut it short due to lack of money and leave the conclusion to inference based on Episode 1. Neon Genesis was awesome, except the ending, they took all the philosophical concepts of the whole series and shoved them down your throat, the alternate ending was MUCH cooler. Cowboy Bebop was also really awesome, but they messed up on the way they handled space, 0-gravity and vaccuum. You can't float around through space by closing your mouth really tight, folks. At least I don't think you can... Cowboy Bebop was an awesome series, don't get me wrong, I'm just a nit picker. Also, I don't know how I'd feel about it now, but when I was around 10 or so, I really liked Green Legend Ram, this was almost 10 years ago though, so I might feel much differently now. Vampire Hunter D, Blood lust was also awesome... To Be continued!

seriously, i found FLCL to be pretty damn boring to watch because there was no subtleness to the philosophy it was invoking. i'd say that appleseed, or gundam seed are currently the best animes. naruto is amazing on some eps, but long on others. like the fighting between rock lee and gaara is pretty much engraved into my head, because i watched the 90 minutes of it over and over.
oh, and i've gotta give some credit to WHR, but the show's got too much melodrama to be a consistent fav of mine. when we find out what amon's powers are, then maybe it'll move up in my charts.
Is FLCL the title, or is the title longer? I don't think I've heard of it. *scratches head*

a lot of the anime names don't make sense when you stop to think about them. I blame lousy translating!:D
I've always told my friends I'm not going to explain to them the story behind most Anime because it is so foreign to most Americans and can sound so different or outrageous. Not saying in a bad way, just saying its true. So, I tell you that Angelic Layer is about these dolls that can move and fight and the show is about the people in this tournament. Or I'll tell you CardCaptor Sakura is about a girl who has to catch cards that comes alive, meets a thing that looks like a stuffed animal who can transform into a flying Lion and a Man who can sprout Angel-Like Wings and shoot magical arrows at things....
I've seriously told people these things and they give we WIERD looks...seriously, looks they probably don't give to anything else. But then they see it and....its just the magic of Anime. They like it, and alot!
Had a friend recently say he'd never like Angelic Layer when I discribed it to him. Oh, that'll change. :bmage: :bmage: :bmage:
Funny, that in Japan, Hellsing isn't as popular as it is in the states...
I find that odd...

Funny, that in Japan, Hellsing isn't as popular as it is in the states...
I find that odd...
I don't really. Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Hellsing, Akira and all of these types of Shows/Movies have been more popular in the United States than Japan. Same with Metroid, First Person shooters and a host of games off the venue of Grand Theft Auto.
As you can guess, yup, I'm saying Americans like and buy dark and or violent things more than Japanese people do. That's why alot of certain things just don't do so well in Japan but do tremendously well in America. Resident Evil was even that way util recently. And a good way that shows the difference between the Japanese Taste for Violence and American is that the first RE for GC (RE1 Remake) didn't sell very well in Japan, but sold alot more in American. However the first original RE game (RE0), which was much more character centered and about exploration and involved somewhat less gore sold better in Japan than RE1 Remake while it sold worse in America than the previous game.
Now, I'm not saying the Japanese hate all gore or something. I'm just saying, for the most part, certain shows have seen a trend of not doing well in Japan and then coming over hereand being some of the most popular (and over-known) shows in America. The main reason I think it is this way for some of these shows and not others however is because the Japanese seem to want certain types of characters while Americans want another. And most commonly I see Americans wanting characters like Spike, Vash, Kenshin or Haruko. But in Japan, some things that are just plain violent and even beyond things probably most of you have seen in the gore department, yet have deep characters that the storyis centered around seem to be quite popular, such as 3x3 Eyes, Kenshin (the OAV) and so on.
But also, most of those gory things the general public can't watch till they're older and like it or not, the general amount of Anime produced is for people from a child to adult to watch (not in any extreme as in ONLY for kids or ONLY or Adults).

Americans like cowboys and guns and action, Japanese like magic and wonder and adventure.........this is an often-untrue generalization (I'm American, and I fit more in the second category) but it seems to apply in this case.

I pick Trigun....and here are a few reasons.
1) Main character isn't always the most "heroic" and loves to eat doughnuts
2) Is it just me or is there TOO many hot, one episode only chicks
3) Only one season so far, but it is too good to miss
4) It is one of the "better" anime's that you can get on cable (adult swim, 12:30....tuesday through thursday, and Saturday too)
5) They have it all, a preist(wolfwood), 2 hot main chicks(one ditz, Millie; and Meryl, the one who secretly loves the main character, Vash); Vash, the bubmling main character, who has one of the coolest weapons period(angel arms!)
6) Brother's who fight, but REALLY wanna kill each other, takes sibling rivalry to a NEW height
7) Ok, the bad guys are all either cool looking or have cool powers.
8) ok, the last one, The main character NEVER tries to kill anyone...it makes victory in battle much cooler and much more difficult(moral fortitude of Vash is too good to be true....even a catholic school girl could be put to shame...sorta)

I am among those who have only had limited exposure to anime. At most, I've seen those that were shown on Toonami and later Adult Swim, and my friend has a few.
Off hand, I'd have to say Trigun or Cowboy Bebop. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed these shows until Cartoon Network changed their programming to only have these on once a week, and I was ready to run down to their headquaters (wherever it is) and inflict wrath-filled death upon whoever had that idea.
Honorable mentions go to: The Slayers, Gundam Wing, DBZ, Inyusha(sp), and Outlaw Star, and the few things of Shadow Skill I saw.

My favorite Animes would have to be Neon Genesis: Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop. NGE really blew me away with the depths of it's storyline. The amount of philosophy, existentialism and theology in it is really amazing. The character interactions in it were really great as well, but it was the symbolism and overall message that was sent that truly impressed me.
Cowboy Bebop is the definition of "stylishly cool." Everything from the music to the storylines have that special panache which makes you want to take up smoking, lol. I love it because of how it explores the character's pasts and how they deal with them. The animation is also top-notch, especially when it comes to fight scenes. They didn't skimp when it came to those, like with Trigun. I loved Trigun, but was always a bit disappointed when Vash and Wolfwood were running around doing their thing. There's only so many times a still shot should be used as an "action" scene.
Hacky
07-23-2004, 11:44 PM
I'd have to say Berserk. For something that is so fake it seems so real. Everything was right. All the characters just seemed so... Human. Their emotions and developement were real like what actualy happens. I got done reading the Berserk scans by thehawks earlier this month and the Manga is even better than the Anime. What annoys me are the rumors about a Second season of the Anime. They ended it at a perfect spot, no second season needed. I don't want to spoil it but there are a lot of people were "annoyed" about how it ended, but I loved it... well I didn't apperciate it until I read the Manga but after I read all 26 of them (That are out, #27 is out in 6 or 7 days) I thought the ending of the Anime was awesome and I hope the Manga ends in a similar manner.

Berserk is another favorite of mine, even though I have not seen the last episode yet (damn DVD doesn't have a sub for it, lol) much for the same reasons that you listed, Hacky. The opening tune to the show is terribly catchy, too. Shows that have a lot of promise are Noir, Witch Hunter Robin and Kiddy Grade. I'm loving all of them thus far.

I sooo cannot believe that noone has made mention of one of the best movies ever -------> Ninja Scroll. Now i haven't seen the series but the movie was awesome :D . Also NGE is one of the sweetest animes ever. Chances are if you don't understand it, you might have the IQ of a large hampster. Japanese DBZ and GT own the American versions. I almost cried when I first saw Vegeta die in the Jap version. Again when i saw the English but for a different reason. I couldn't believe how they ruined such a great anime. No more hating on the American crap out there. Ii bought the NOIR soundtract just because I liked the music from a preview that much and hope that the series will be just as entertaining. Inu Yasha is cool too, something for everyone to like there. And the anime cutscenes in the rerelease of Chrono Trigger are awesome. I wish and pray to all the gods out there that they'll make a good sequal to that game (CC suckec) and maybe even some bad-ass anime to go with it.

Recently picked up watching Initial D. What got me interested was the Initial D Arcade Stage game that popped up recently at the local venue. Excellent racing game, excellent anime :-D
btw I reccomend finding a subbed version, since the English version is done by Tokyopop and is E X T R E M E L Y Americanized.
I'll give a plot starter for those unfamiliar... (summarizes approx the first 4-5 episodes) **highlight for spoilers etc**
Takes place in Akina, a Japanese countryside. Street racers race the mountain passes nighly and the local team of Akina Speed Stars is challenged by the Red Suns (a well known, highly skilled, travelling team). While practicing pushing his car harder than he ever had (since he feels his team is likely to lose) the leader of the Speed Stars damages his Silva (S13) to the point where he can't race it. They need a fast fix.
At the same time, in the story, the main character, a High School Senior named Takumi seems to be somewhat normal (albeit a little nhilistic) and works at the same gas station that the Speed Stars do. His knowlege of cars is minimal. (he doesn't even know the name of the car he drives!)
The Red Suns start to practice. They're lead by two RX-7 (referrred to in the Anime as an FD) driving brothers. The 2nd-in-command brother, Ryouske, practices driving downhill and shortly after, an 86 Trueno (Corolla in the US) pulls up behind and tries to pass. Moments later in a difficult corner, the Trueno passes with ease and leaves the RX-7's driver wondering how the hell such an outdated underpowered car passed him.
The next day, the Ryouske stops at the gas station (same one with the Speed Stars and Takumi) and asks them (since they're locals) if they know anything about the Trueno. They don't, but they mention it to the manager (a good friend of Takumi's dad) after Ryouske drives off. He knows, and says it belongs to a local tofu shop. After work, the Speed Stars leader goes looking for it, and after multiple visits, finds out that it's owned by Takumi's dad (Bunta), and asks him to race for them (thinking that Bunta passed Ryouske that evening). Eventually, Bunta kind-of agrees that the 86 Trueno will race against the Red Suns for them.
All the while, through phone conversation between Bunta and the gas station manager, we learn that Takumi has been driving the 86 Trueno since Jr High, delivering Tofu. His skill comes from going through the mountain daily to deliver tofu for the family buisness, while not spilling a 3/4 full glass of water that Bunta puts in the cupholder (if it's rough enough to spill, the Tofu might be damaged). Since the start, he's been going faster and faster, just so he could get it over with and go to bed. It was he who passed Ryouske that night, and will be the one to show up and race for the SpeedStars.
The plot really gets going right after this point, but you'll just have to find out where it goes for yourself.
You can be sure you can expect this (http://www.angelfire.com/ult/darkt0aster/bunta.html) sort of action :D (note: Bunta--Takumi's dad--is the squinty-eyed guy driving, the gas station manager is the other one in the car ... yeah i know it's manga, but it's still great and appears in the anime later on)
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Only gripes: a few too many not-so-distant flashbacks, lack of really good engligh version (if you buy in the US, it's overly americanized, if you get online, a fair amount are lower-quality fan-sub TV-rips with a few corrupted spots, but still entirely viewable).

Ya know, I gotta go with RickAkira on this one... Akira was pretty good, things died, alot, but without any of the stupid smart-alicke remarks, it's straight up, Fugg you, doctor, Fugg you hobo, Fugg you, Fugg you, you're cool, not wait, no you're not *SPLORCH* I also gotta go with X somewhat, it was cheesy, but the way things got killed got me hooked. Oh yea, one you guys might not have heard of, Princess Mononoke! *counts the Ns and Os* Yea, Mononoke. It was somewhat realistic, yet completly fake at the same time, with the real humane extremities of the olden days of the Samurai. :thief:

I've heard of it, got the vhs and the dvd when it came out. Akira had a good storyline but....I'm not a fan of extreme gore.
If we are also talking about good anime movies, I'd have to say Escaflowne:The move. It has everything; good storyline, nice animation, awesome music(!) and Van looks really hot! :) . Jk, but seriously, it even has some gore for you gore fans out there.

Escaflowne was pretty cool. "Teki wa subete korosu!" *cuts off airship captain's head* :bmage:
I can't say I've really decided on what anime is truly best. It depends on a lot of factors. I have always been, I somewhat shamefully admit, a sucker for the more romantic animes. Usually the "One guy, tons of girls" type. Love Hina, Tenchi, Sister Princess, etc.
Best anime I've ever watched? Difficult to surmise. As an overall anime...I would say Trigun. I love the storyline. It starts out lighthearted to hook some people's interests, but as the story progresses, things become much darker and grim. It's an anime I don't mind watching over and over.
Cowboy Bebop is also good. Some of those episodes are really, really weird. But a lot of them are pretty intriguing. *watches Ed eat the mold...pudding...thing.*
I'm still tired, so I can't think that well. *blames being sick and not being able to sleep.* I'll figure something out. Till then, posteth to thy heart's content...eth.

I would say Naruto, but Naruto sometimes gets like, long, for instance that battle with the guy with the Cloud-esque sword and the dude who looks like a girl but is in fact a guy. that was long. So, i actually Great Teacher Onizuka the best. Cuz its funny. so there.

Sadly, for me, there isn't much anime access around, and without a job, I can't just go online and buy some. So, from my limited amount of anime that I have watched over the years, I'd say that I like Ruroni Kenshin the most.

Princess Mononoke is pretty well known. It was really good, but it's not something that I can stand to watch more than once or twice a year.

I always liked Rurouni Kenshin the best; the plot was good and fights had just enough action, never having to last more than a couple episodes before Kenshin, Saito, Samanosuke, and in some cases, *Yahiko*, kicked some serious ass or got their asses seriously kicked. My favorite character's gotta be Kenshin, especially during the last couple of episodes, when he ownsed Shishio with the Amakakaruryuhiryu-nomeki(i think i spelled that right, please correct me if i didn't). w00t! I'm with you all the way, cloud strife! by the way, who's your favorite Rurouni Kenshin character?

Top 10
1. Cowboy Bebop - Excelent in every aspect
2. Wolf's Rain - Creators of Cowboy Bebop + a more linear plotline, how can you go wrong?
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion- More of a tie for 2nd or even 1st, this is one of the best all time animes ever. amazing story line, awesome character development, and it truly does screw with your mind.
4. Excel Saga - American dubbed version is horrid, but overall absolutely hillarious
5. Akira - Started whole darn craze in the United States, and is still almost unparalled by any other anime movie.
6. Pefect Blue - A feature length movie which is an amazing psychological thriller, i would read the book, but i cant find an english translation
7. FLCL - GAINX screwing around, and bored? This is what you get, darn funny, but only 6 Episodes
8. Berserk - An excelent anime, well done, has a great story and all the gore you can ask for. An amazing balance - oh and theres a Dreamcast Console game for it too =)
9. Love Hina - While it might sound like a hentai or something in those categories, its not, its actualy a very funny-if a bit cute or what not - anime. Good for watching with your GF or something (funny as hell)
10. Ghost in the Shell - I was a fan of the original, and was also very pleasantly suprised with the new Stand Alone Complex, the first dvd was just released in the United States (eps 1-4), and with the Movie, Innocence, being released in Theaters tomorrow (the 17th of September) I cant help but list this Movie/series in this list. Loved it when i first saw it, and love it now.
Meant to edit out taht crap bout CTN and stuff, left from a post on another forum 8)

*Looks around*
Naruto.
*Runs*
Naruto's great. As for your avatar, im afraid to say that sasuke's my favorite character.sakura:he's so cool! naruto:dammit! why cant i get that kind of attention.
back on the avatar subject, Gaara sucks.Although I respect his skill, what the hell kind of weapon is sand? Also, most of the Konoha ninja(and even Rock Lee, to a certain extent) have some sort of special skill, be it Taijutsu, Genjutsu, Ninjutsu, or even Kekkei Genkai, that could kick Gaara's little Desert Graveyard move's ass halfway out of the galaxy. In second place for favorite character come naruto and sakura cuz they're funny, but my least favorite character's gotta be Ino. She's even more obnoxious than sakura, but only beats her teammate Chowgi by a hair's breadth. And although shikamaru's cool, i dont like his face. In terms of funny characters i also like kakashi, but master guy is the best
Guy: ah, the exuberance of youth. All of you are full of it!
Sasuke!
Sakura:!!
Naruto:Yaagh!
All: he's got the biggest eyebrows yet
theyre uberbrows!

Um... Rurouni Kenshin.... Trigun... Rurouni Kenshin.... Trigun....
I can't decide. Sanosuke... Vash... Sanosuke... Vash...
They're just all too good... They've got humor, drama, action, tragedy..... basically the perfect sagas. Except Trigun was too short. But the last season of Kenshin sucked so it could have been shorter....
