Bah, you youngsters and your new fangled computer colored/assisted animes... *wheeze*
I can't name a "best anime", for that would require me to judge every title that I've seen by only one set of standards (it would also imply that I've seen every anime title in existence, which I most definitely have not).
"Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water" is easily, and has long been, my favorite though.
Sure the animation quality changes from episode to episode, and the story gets a little weird in the middle for a while, but over all this is a great series and a definite classic. A must see for steam-punk mecha fans.
Did I mention that Nadia contains a transforming, multi purpose, tank with a feminine name and paint job? Hmmm, now why might I bring that up? :D

You do not know what you are talking about my comrades! Comic Party is the one true lord among all animes! "Lord" Taishi is absoulutely hilarious! Plus he makes awesome speaches like, "The twentieth century. The block-buster action movies develpoed in America were exported world wide. And it would not be an exagerartion to say, all the people of Earth were brainwashed with the pointless idiology of entertainmentism! But now the twenty-first century. A new cultural standard will be sent forth from Japan to conquer the entire world! Yes, it is none other than the Fan Comic! Starting tomorrow morning, we will be highschool seniors. However is it right to automatically graduate up onto college? Simply proceeding along this dull, ordinary, planned out life? I say Nay! Let this depravity of instagnation invouluntarate you! World conquest by a new media called Fan Comics. True world unification that not even Rome or the great British Empires could accomplish! And yes, to become rulers of the world, we will create a master Fan Comic together starting now!!!" or "Do not doubt the power of the muffin! The muffin will smite all those who question it! It will crush all nay-sayers! He who controls the muffin controls the entire world!" or "Wait, we can't leave! Obviously I have inspried the spark of an idea in Comrade Kazuki, so I must give him another pep talk to keep him going: My famous Dance of Incouragement--' "Why don't you do you're little dance at the trainstation? When I'm not around that is.' 'But my dance of incouragement... My Dance!" Now you must watch it. Trust me, on my honor as a Chaotic Evil Human Fighter Paladin you must see it and be impressed! :fighter:
BTW: Slayers (tv) and Gundam (any except F91 & G) are quite good as well as Angelic Layer, Full Metal Panic, Oh My Goddess and Movie, You're Under Arrest and Movie, Sakura Wars and Taisen and Movie, Final Fantasy Unlimited, Read Or Die TV and OVA, Robotech, Super Gals, Gensomaden Saiyuki, Haibane Renmei, Last Exile, Cowboy Bebop, Those Who Hunt Elves, Jubei chan, Excel
Saga, Appleseed (Trailers Only, but highly reccomended), Gungrave, Happy Lesson, Kino's Journey, Pretear, Figure 17, Love Hina, Lupin, and .Hack (Almost any). I think that's just about every anime I've seen not including Poke'mon and Yu-gi-Oh! :fighter:

2. The art style is good and the music is incredible (forces!)
3. Guts is cool. the sword is cool. Violence.
4. It was finally not about japan.

Post your arguements for why you think any particular anime is the bestest! or perhaps post a (non-flamming) rebuttal as to why you disagree.
you can still make individual posts about any particular anime, but if its to talk about why you think its the best anime ever, please confine it to this thread.

As long as I've been hanging around these forums, I've never posted here. How strange...
My favorite, and therefore the best, anime is Slayers. The funny thing about that is that I can think of numerous other animes which surpass it in all qualities, depth of story, character development, comedic value, animation quality, anything really. But the way it comes together, and the light heartedness of it all, they really strike a chord with me.
It might be that "fist love" syndrome too. Slayers kind of opened my eyes to the wide world of anime, and for that I will forever love it.

I found wolfs rain almost intolerable. I tried to watch it, but the overstylised characters and over dramatic BS were too much for me. It had blood, so what? The plot line was so convoluted that I didn't really care what happened, and the artwork was somewhat sub par. Especially the outfits on some of the main characters. teh trashy.
All in all I didn't really get it, and this is coming from someone who loved Evangelion.
maybe I'm just crazy.

I really can't pick a favourite, I've seen many good anime/ manga shows but atm i would have to say its these three (in no particular sequence)
Final Fantasy Unlimited
the drawing may not be super awesome but why do you need it when you have an awesome story line.
Akira
Its pretty much the movie that started the whole anime thing, its a classic and plus it is awesome. I mean Tetsuo Oshima rocks he might be insane, but his character was a well developed one and plus the whole movie was good.
last Exile
Huge flying ships what more do you want, plus the animation is good so is the stroyline.
p.s Is the hack// series good i seen it in the shops and looked at it but never brought it thought I would ask somenoe who has seen it.

I now realize that there are many animes that I like. A lot. So, no one anime stands out in my mind as my 'favorite'. Of course, save for Hellsing and Ghost in the Shell, the movie, I have yet to watch anything anime that hasn't been on AS or G4TechTV. T-T

I realize that I have come into this thread quite a long time since it started. I have only read the first 6 pages of responses to the topic, so please forgive me if I say some of this with inaccuracy: I am surprised that noone has mentioned Fooly Cooly. It was incredibly short, but I found it to be humorous and insinuative, both qualities that I admire in the anime I watch. It easily takes my top spot. I loved the characters and their antics and the soundtrack added to the vibe of it all. It was sad that there was only 6 episodes, but having seen it I understand why.
Ranma is also incredible, with its basic concept being hilarious in itself. I admittedly will state that I am seldom impressed with action-oriented anime, although I can tell when one is just terrible (think DBZ). I do have a few action-oriented favorites though, Trigun, Inuyasha, and Rouroni Kenshin (sp?) all having the amount of humor and action that I do enjoy.
Also, there are many "good" anime shows I haven't seen. Shows like Evangelion and Full Metal Alchemist are on my to see list. However, I was not impressed with Witch Hunter Robin, Big O (he just seem like a cross between Bruce Wayne from Batman and any generic mecha-anime?), or Cowboy Bebop(don't really know why I didn't like it). Every other anime falls in one of two categories: they were okay or I haven't seen them yet.
I realize that I may take some flack for bringing this one up, but I found the Animatrix to be incredible. I agreed with most people in stating that the second and third movies were terrible sequels to The Matrix. However, after seeing the Animatrix, with its darkened tone and subtle genious, I felt that the sequels were somehow redeemed. They will never be as good as the origional, but the Animatrix did something that I thought could not be done: it turned two otherwise horrible pieces of film into very enjoyable works of art. That aside, it was awesome to watch for its own sake.
Wow. Sorry, that was kind of long, but there you go.

Hello. I've been reading through these forums for awhile now hoping to see someone say definitvely that RK and NGE (for you who not not of what i speak that's Rurouni Kenshin and Neon Genesis Evangelion inclusive of all episodes and movies) are the Pillars Of Heaven as far as anime is concerned. A great anime has the same criteria for greatness as a great book. (btw if dbz is the kind of thing you feed your brain on you are indeed to be pitied) Anyway i digress. Eva did something that no other anime hasbeen able to do as succesfully. What? Well it merged more than one storyline into a continuous whole. i.e. some people watch it and only see that it's about mecha and destruction and saving the world and all. Others see that's it's also about family (if you watch FARSCAPE the sci fi series you'll know what i mean by that). The most avid listeners and attentive watchers and lucid thinkers will realise that it's actually about them. YES EVA TEACHES. Then of course there is the direction. IF Patience is not in your soul do not watch eva. If Intelligence is an allergen to you, do not watch eva. The Characters are... let's just say that you will feel a connection with at least one of them for they will mirror an aspect of your own psyche. The action... There are somethings in this world that will give pause to a beating heart and then exite it to an indeterminate hum. (when you see what happens to Asuka during Arael's Attack you'll understand.) The concepts are also out of this world.
Then there is RK. I will not attempt to try to define why it is the best. I will simply ask if you felt the tears well up in your throat at 'Wishing Firefly Bend'; if the rythmic melodies of composers Taku Iwasaki and Taro Iwashiro act as balm to your soul. If the answer to these questions is yes then you already know and thus don't need to be told.
Here is a list though of other things which are worth a watch
FLCL:- by Jove it's funny!!! it's just soooo enjoyable
Betterman:- it's near the level of eva, has beautiful animation etc.
Silent Mobius:- dude this anime rocks.
Gundam:- these series are for the most part extremely excellent

You failed to mention Don Bluth. You also failed to mention half the people who were in Warner Bros, all those involved with Pixar, all those involved with any of the cartoons from the late 80s/early 90s and just about a ton of other people.
And by the way....what do they have to do with Anime again?
And just so you know, pleanty of shows have done similar styles to eva and many Animes have done what you pointed out Eva as doing. And although Eva is a great show, it isn't the end all for Anime. Its near the top on one end of a very large platform that is Anime. There are pleanty of things it didn't do that were done by other Animes (and not by other forms of media).

Hey, all. I'm noticing two separate trends here: favorite anime and best anime, and I think the two of those are really different questions.
As far as having everything in the right places and appealing to the most people for the most reasons, I'd say Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop take the spot here. There's nothing I can say about either of them that hasn't been said. Really, I think in order to be considered the "best" of something, the main requirement is that it appeals to more people than would a "personal favorite" that one person develops an attachment to. Both of those two animes are almost my favorites, but my Big Three beat them out in terms of my personal taste:
My personal favorites are Elfenlied, Lain and Azumanga Daioh. Please, if anyone can figure out what possible link these three share, I'd love to hear it because it confuses the living crap out of me.
Elfenlied: If not for the groan-and-bang-my-head-against-a-wall, theater-of-the-absurd nudity that gets thrown in there for what seems to be the sole purpose of cheapening the show, I'd call it possibly the best thing ever to be put on a screen. I'm really no prude, but Elfenlied suffers a lot from the way-overblown sexuality angle. Even in spite of all that, there's so much emotion crammed into every minute of the show that I completely forget that there's this "reality" thing happening elsewhere. Also, Lucy = pwn.
Serial Experiments Lain: I was surprised to find that I actually followed the plot of this the first time through. HUZZAH for me! The emotion factor is still there, albiet much more understated. There's also lots in Lain to stoke the fires of philosophical insight without becoming another Boogiepop Phantom (which I liked, except that its angst level was so high that I felt embarassed just watching it).
Azumanga Daioh: Parts of it are pretty funny, but if you're going for straight-out raucous laughter there are much better choices. (Anime comedy is slooowwwwly getting better. I used to avoid any anime labeled "comedy" like the plague) With Azumanga, I always just feel happier after watching it than before watching it. I'm usually not laughing while watching it, but I get this dumb grin that lasts the entire time.

Personally, for me it will always be the Slayers series as a whole. It's what got me into anime in the first place, so I kinda judge whatever Anime I see on its example. Other reasons include...
Magic and Sorcery based- Do I really have to say anything here? I know some people like their giant robots and Dark Age mechanical scenarios, but I've always been of the opinion that swinging swords and casting magical spells is one of the best styles ever.
Lina Herself- Come on, how can anyone have seen Slayers and not been able to tell it was in class on it's own (not necessarily a better class). For once, the Heroine is not some sappy little pretty princess who wears virtually no clothing, as is usually the standard for anime in general. Which, BTW, I really despise. Allot.
The Cast- who hear can tell me that they don't like even one of Lina's traveling crew? They are so weird and different that it's very hard not to find one that you like. From Zelgadis' Goth-ness (which is funny to watch in NEXT specifically) to Goury's utter Stupidity and everything in between, what else could an anime lover truly want?

Yeah, I am REALLY late into this topic, but I don't care. I am going to have to say something I didn't see at all here, and that would be Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Pluses: Futuristic (I am a sucker for futuristic political sci-fi *drools*), and Political. Intelligent (ah you MAY know who the laughing man is mid-way through season 1 but you're guess as to why he does his things is off! As for season 2, everytime I THINK I know what is going on, *BAM* something happens like people slicing each other's heads off). Tachikomas (possibly mispelled) pwn j00r s0uL.
Negatives: It can be addicting and leave you in suspense - though a good show will do that >_>.

Ghost in the Shell Second GiG is better than the first season as it has less episode which seem to go nowhere. Whoever hasn't seen Kino no Tabi (Kino's Journey or Travels) is missing out on something special. Anime - has the tendancy to be shallow, Kino no Tabi is thought provoking and interesting as it follows the journey of a girl and her talking motorcycle. Those who haven't seen project A-ko should get on that as well.

I respectfully have to disagree, Nikkoru. Although it is true that the second season tends to stay on the season events more than the first, I freaking loved The Laughing Man. I guess it’s due to politics, but I thought the series was more lively and enjoyable – though the second season certainly doesn’t suck.
Oh, and a list of good animes in my opinion:
Bleach, Gundam Seed, and G-Gundam. I read the manga of Hellsing, and hear the anime is better, though I could be wrong – besides, everyone wrote Hellsing, lol.
Well good day. –JoN-

Granted the laughing man character was interesting, as were some of the episodes that he was involved in, but there were also episodes in which I was simply bored out of my mind - well, even those episodes were better than the entirity of Witch Hunter Robin. the Second GiG has a quicker pace and tends to be more interesting throughout.

Granted, though I have only seen up to episode 13 in the second season (torrent sites would be nice) the Particularist Eleven plot is at least more involving. Good day. -JoN-
Nikkoru
03-01-2005, 10:25 PM
It gets much better after 13, trust me on that - one of the key points missing from the first season was any type of character analysis, the 2nd GiG looks at the individual characters and how they became who they are without being needlessly specific - I guess you could say it has more depth.
regarding hellsing, the manga is better than the anime as the fight sequences are somewhat tame and considering the plot isn't much to begin with it kind of ruins it all. Besides it was kind of strange for a Japanese anime to be set entirally in England, it seems wrong to me on some level.
If you thought G-Gundam and Gundam Seed were good you should consider getting the original Mobile Suit Gundam - the one with Amuro Ray, it may not look as pretty as more recent anime series but the plot is legendary in it's originality (at the time) and marvellous character development.

I forget if I posted in here or not but.. my favorites are:
Inuyasha, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist. There's more but I'd count them all as mangas so yeah...
The one's that aren't on t.v. (or close to it) that I miss greatly: ALL Gundam shows, ALL Dragon Ball shows, Trigun and Outlaw Star! *sniff sniff* I used to watch Sailor Moon too (Sailor MArs is the best!!^^), but I never considered it a "favorite".

My favorite animes? Hmm. I have a few.
Cowboy Bebop - I know, I know, it's mainstream. But seriously, everything about it's just smooth... except the Pierrot Le Fou episode... the writers must have been having a really horrible hangover or something with that one.
Naruto - Classic stuff. I'm dreading what the horrible dubbing companies will do to butcher this one. I hear people calling it "the new DBZ" all the time... really, it's an injustice.
Golden Boy - This one is what can satisfy the pervert in any of us. Toilet humor, naughty bits... I laughed until my sides hurt on a couple of the episodes. Too bad the series was so short....
Can't say I'll ever like FLCL though.... I just can't figure out what's so great about it... *twitch*

I'll gladly put in my favorites. I'm a big Outlaw Star, Bubblegum Crisis, Lodoss War, and .hack//SIGN fan. Each series had thier own little flairs and kept me interested right through the end.
Outlaw Star: Samurai Action meets Wild West meets Science Fiction Theater. This series was just simply awesome, the setting is perfect, the characters were great.
Bubblegum Crisis: The music, the animation quality, and the well thought out story kept me hooked from start to end. Not to mention I think Nene is very much like I am in many ways.
Lodoss War: A very classic storyline with a very nice pace and well thought out scenes. This work of art usually helps me get into a fantasy mood right before a roleplaying game.
.hack//SIGN: As an avid MMORPG player, this series really caught me. I love the idea of a cyber adventure in our own time.

(Put together in no particular order) Azumanga Daioh, Lupin III, Full Metal Alchemist and Panic, FLCL, Hunter x Hunter (eat it Naruto!),Cowboy Bebop,Detective Conan(Case Closed), Trigun, .Hack//sign and dusk (but not legend of the twilight bracelet), and (confusing as is) Boogiepop Phantom

Allow me to update my stance. I watched Full Metal Alchamest in the span of 5 days. I have never seen such an addictive/fantastic series. I claim Full Metal Alchamest as my favorite/best anime. The artwork is a style I like, the story is superb (great ways to ring you in, then BAM plot twist in the face!), characters are very likeable, and the anime can be humorous as well as serious. 6 out of 5 stars from me. What of Ghost in the Shell? 5 out of 5 stars. I cannot watch much anime now without feeling disapointed due to FMA, lol.

Ayashi no Ceres, Ayashi no Ceres, AYASHI NO CERES!!! Love that series, Yu Watase is my favorite animator, the manga is better than the anime but so what, it's awesome. Other than that, Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist(you have to, you can't not love it), Full Metal Panic, Girl Got Game(gotta love crossdressers!), Fushigi Yugi, Sailor Moon(my first anime), Yu Gi Oh(the japanese version, not the watered down american version), Hellsing, FLCL, DN Angel, Fruits Basket, Kill Me Kiss Me(again, crossdressers), Ranma 1/2(crossdressers...), Tokyo Mew Mew, Chobits(Chi! obviously), Di Gi Charat, Trigun, DBZ(not GT, that one's a little too far), Azumanga Daioh(so random), Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, EVERYTHING by Hayou Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Mononoke Hime, Laputa-Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, etc.) .hack//SIGN and .hack, Tenchi Muyo... maybe I should stop there... ^ ^;;;

God I'm gonna get flamed for this but i didn't really think Naruto lived up to the hype it delivered over the royal internet for so long. I watched and sorta thought this isn't aas good as people said and put it down. Personally I preferred Hunter x Hunter it had a better storyline (Naruto's seemed a bit cliche) better audio and an all around better feel... but thats just me. Anyway i just wanted to add the Hayou Miyazaki stuff, Shiro Masamune stuff, and Rumiko Takahashi stuff.

I'm primarily into Shonen stuff, but I do have a little bit of interest outside of it. My top 5 would be:
1. Yu Yu Hakusho
2. Dragon Ball
3. Dragon Ball Z
4. Saint Seiya
5. Berserk
Honorable Mention: Blue Gender, Armored Trooper Votoms, Record of Lodoss War (TV or OAV I like both quite a bit), Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers, Street Fighter II V, Sailor Moon
I tend to like longer shows, shows that are under 50 some episodes usually do not flesh out the world enough for me and leave me wanting more.

I dont know about "best anime" because it's impossible to choose just one out of all the different types of genres that exist in anime.
I will say though that Hikaru no Go is incredibly good. Watching people play Goh has never been so awesome. You'd think it'd be boring and unexciting, but it's a million times better than most of the chopped up crap you find on the "Fox Box".

Im still pissed of about what happened to the original yu-gi-oh. the t.v. show is all about the card game when in reality, they play it twice in the orignal manga. Yugi actually kills people alot in the manga, its fun! I kind of feel sorry for one piece and naruto fans here, we get to see the kiddie versions. I honestly don't know how the hell they r gonna do this to naruto. people's arms explode, they stab eachother on a regular basis, there is so much killing and blood it that series. they r gonna hack it up sooooo badly. im not gonna even watch it when it comes out.

My favorite manga is Hikaru no Go. Anyone who has a subscription to Shonen Jump should know its about a kid who finds a ghost of a midevil guy who plays the game go and the kid learns to play from him. I know it dosn't have flashy things or gore but the character progression and interaction is very realalistic.
And fullmetal alchemist (my favorite anime TV show) more then fills my blood and explosions quota.

Naruto - yes i agree and am afraid what they are goign to do to it when it does get onto the tube here. cause well its stull like Sailormoon and pokemon that are giving aniem a bad name.
Air- its short and confusing but i still like it
My hime- really sad aniem actually but also really realy good
Bleach(I did not feel like reading through 5 pages of posts but what i glanced over no one put this)- this anime kicks ass and i do mean so much so that if they ever license this one it will also be butchered to hell cause of all the killing and violend and blood especially in the newer part of the series i have seen now
Yakitate!! Japan - hey this anime is cool despite it being about bread and making bread.
Cheeky angel(i cant remeber the japanese name for it)- Hounestally i dunno why i like this so much but i do
i could name another 100 titles that i like but of course all that reading you would have to to would just be crule. So lets just say so far there have been 2 titles in anime that i have not liked out of the few hundred titles that i have seen just tells ya im a really big anime fan..

I've come to regard Trigun fanboys like I do Dragonball Z fanboys. Trigun is a good anime, I think it explores some human nature issues well. But, it's really a stretch to call it the "best of all time". You should check out your nearest Suncoast's anime section. Try Ghost in the Shell, Noir, Abenobashi, Samurai X, they're all great animes. No anime has impressed me enough yet to be called best of all time, though.

Speaking of Trigun fanboys, hi ^^;
Yeah, I'm not saying it's the best - I'm far too uninformed or experienced to do so. I thoroughly enjoyed Bebop though, and I've seen Trigun. Both subbed... and I really loved Trigun.
For me it's just seeing many things I thought brought out in a series was quite nice, and like any fan boy I love the character of Vash. I'm sure there's better out there, just Trigun truly appeals to me. Watching the series through the second time was interesting, seeing some of the rather subtle foreshadowing of some things, and the smaller hints about Meryl's love for Vash that you don't spot until you look for it.
Also, at the time of watching Trigun my philosophy class was studying Kantian and utilitarian ethics. To see some of the very kantian and utilitarian ideas brought up was interesting ^^ (And no, Knives isn't utilitarian - Wolfwood is.)
Didn't cry when me and my girlfriend of a year broke up. But I did cry in three of the last-ish episodes. I wont say which, but of the sad scenes of the last episodes, it's quite easy to tell >.>
But then, I'm just a Trigun fanboy, eh? I don't mind, it's by far my favourite, and I am aware there's not only better out there, but that my love of Trigun is unreasonable.
Oh, as for soundtracks, I recently got the Trigun one and it's pretty awesome, but it doesn't compare to the Bebop soundtrack. I had 4 CD's of bebop in my iPod mini and listened to it exclusively while out for about 5 months. Crazy.

6: Evangelion (MAYBE. Only saw 3 eps so far. If not, then Gundam Seed - leaning towards Gundam Seed though)
Edit: Good point Nall. Most of those up there are just my opinion then :P. However, FMA is so popular (I even got a friend of mine who doesn't watch anime to obsess over FMA), that I wonder if it is #1. But hey, if anyone's opinion differs, oh well.

What is up with your posts? Seriously? Who even said something about that except in the most passing of ways?
And if that was supposed to be a question, it lacks a very important character to mark it as such. To begin with. (I dropped some hints there because I've been playing adventure games lately; blame them.) Not to mention the debate on "Subs vs. Dubs" is banned on these forums anyway (but there are stickied threads for either preference).
Back on topic, you've got all the time in the world to write your posts, so please, do us all a favour and make use of it. No one will feel like unravelling your insane abbreviations all the time for very long.

Well, I would have to say, currently my favorite anime is the Evangellion series. I was too dissapointed by the movies to really get into them. Replacing characters voices with such obvious unlikenesses was unsettling, and they did not edit the voices to sound like the setting the characters were in either. A voice in the giant cavern of Terminal Dogma, or in the Control room should sound like a voice in a giant cavern, nicht wahr? Also, a pop remake of Tchaikovsky's Kom Susser Tod, was *totally* ridiculous.
The series however, goodness. I wished Asuka had been more developed, but it was overall certainly made for a serious thinker. Still trying to find more on the Sephiroth.
My other favorite series would definatly be Trigun. I know, I know, everyone says that, but maybe thats cause it was _so_ darn good!
The movie I like best would have to be Vamp D bloodlust, or the first ghost in the shell. Both awsome animation, voices, music and story line.

At this point, after long thought, my favorite anime is, definately, Cowboy Bebop.
Why?
Simple. Cowboy Bebop is excellent at almost everything it does. The action, the art direction, the music...all of it. Cowboy Bebop has some of the best art direction I've seen in anime, let alone an action anime. If you don't believe me, watch Ballad of Fallen Angels or Pierrot Le Fou, both episodes are packed with amazing visuals and have awesome action scenes.

Off topic, but yay, a RA2 player (Toastburner B)! If you have Yuri's Revenge (and patched) download the Robot Storm mod, you will not be dissapointed.
Now for something ON topic: Bleach has probably bumped up another notch in my favorites. Still surprising how normally action animes piss me off, but I am enjoying Bleach quite well.

A couple anime to see to freak the sh** out of you.
Perfect Blue. This anime has such an entrancing storyline with such an unnatural loss sense of reality you will be freaking out by the end.
Paranoia Agent. This little story of paranoia rumors a boy with a bat with its odd storytelling style and mythical power will certainly make you freak out with your own thoughts as it falls down to the end.
Serial Experiments Lain. Seriously stretch and warping and even breaking the line between reality and the net in a far more freakish way than .hack Lain will make you freak out.
Boogiepop Phantom....with a storytelling style that sends you forward backward and inbetween the storyline reapeatedly a group of people with strange abilities death unusuality and such wierdness you will have to watch this series back to back repeatedly to completely grasp what has just occured.
End of Evangelion. If you saw Neon Genesis then you must see the freakiest ending to any anime I have EVER experienced if this does not freak the living hell out of you I lack a clue just WHAT WILL!
EDIT: How in gods name could I forget Boogiepop?

AIR - Gonna hafta throw in a vote for this one. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. This goes for story, music and the art-direction. It isn't for everyone though, especially if you are into anime with a speedier pace and action.
Mai HiME - I think I only saw one mention of this one. It doesn't sound very impressive when described so it's hard to get people to watch this one originally. It's also a little slow in terms of hooking the audience until about episode 8 or so as most of the beginning episodes are introducing the huge and varied cast in the show. But once the main story arc gets going its non-stop action and has some devious plot twists and revelations. You actually feel sorry for the characters because the writers really put them thru a special kind of hell. Ending leaves something to be desired, though. The general consensus seems to be that the writers were likely pressured to put a happy note in the thing before it closed up.
Rozen Maiden - This is actually one of my favorite anime and my choice for introducing anime if the target is female. It's whimsical, cute and just enjoyable and gets good reviews from anime-newbies.

My favorite? Slayers. (see avatar)
However, there are only so many times one can watch all the DVD's in sequence. And all the Cartoon Network stuff is too late for me except the pseudo-anime on Miguzi.
Totally Spies! reruns: Dear. God. No.
Teen Titans reruns: Good, but not if you've already seen the episode. (I probably have)
New Code Lyoko: Can you say, tEh Awxome? :D
Seriously, it's not that much better, and yet... it rocks. Maybe it's a subliminal reaction to the theme song. Maybe it's those damn squid people hypnotizing me (what is up with that girl and those... beings, anyway?). Whatever, I still like it.
Oh, and before you bring it up: Yes, I know it's not technically anime, no, I don't care.

Of course they do; they're the main characters! ;D The series would be at a loss if they died permanently. Gara's also a freak, if you haven't noticed. He probably inherited some regenerative powers from being one of the Lords of Chaos. I dunno. Who cares? They're l337!
Gods I wish they would make the rest of the episodes already... -_- Hell, I'LL do it, if they let me.

I think rurouni kenshin i was of my favorites. It was about like the best samuri and how he was awsome in some war and won't kill anymore. but he gets in battles wether he kills or not and ends up winning. It was on TV for a while and then it was taken off and I searched for it and stuff but later I gave up. It was really sick though.

Read the manga. The anime only covers the first four or five volumes, and leaves out a lot of the plot elements (like who the hell that little dragon things is) and some of the more...juicier bits ;)
The manga is about at volume 25 now. Right now, Dark Scheider is simply the most gloriously overpowered character in manga history.

I'm not sure if its been mentioned yet (I got to page 6 before deciding 43 pages was far too many for me to read through), but I really liek Onegai Teacher (although it is far from my favorite). I would have to Berserk and Escaflowne tie for best series (IMHO) with Trigun, Naruto, and Wolf's Rain coming in second. I haven't seen too many anime movies, but Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust comes in first (awesome fight scenes).

I just wondered why they called it TRIGUN???First off, for the love of fluffy kittens, fewer smilies, more rational thought, eh? Randomness is fun stuff and all, but it should be a diversion, not the focus of the post. According to me, at least.
Regardless, Trigun is called so because Vash uses three guns during the series: his original pistol, (spoilers) the hidden machine-gun in his arm, and the Angel Arm. (/spoilers)

I know what you mean but i dont think it is that simple. Mabey TRI means three diffrent points of view from people... Vash's no kill way...Wolfwoods kill to survive and Knives's mass genocide POV (IMO) Oops off topic again!

Vash's no kill way...Wolfwoods kill to survive and Knives's mass genocide POV (IMO) Oops off topic again! That could be it, too. It's never really been, y'know, explained. But I figure having such a simple title for an anime with such complex characters is a good contrast that corresponds with the one between the beliefs of Vash and Knives. Whatever works, I suppose.

Remember Cowboy Bebop? That, I believe, was the greatest anime of all time. It had it ALL, from an intriguing story to amazingly choreographed fight-scenes to very memorable characters and excellent translation as well. The art style was also fantastic and added to the overall immersion of the series. Funny, clever, and stylish, CB definetly deserves some serious recognition.

12-08-2005, 06:06 PM
Actually, Vash uses five guns (that I can remember) -SPOILERS-his pistol, his first gun arm (they single shot one), the machingun arm, the angel arm (which techniquely should be counted as his pistol, cause it is), and Wolfwood's giant machinegun/rocket launcher -SPOILERS-
Kikuichimonji
12-08-2005, 06:30 PM
Actually, Vash uses five guns(Spoilers)The gun in his arm is upgraded into a machine gun, not replaced, and Wolfgang's gun is specifically not Vash's. Every source I can find, which is admittably not many, says the show is named as such because he uses/has three guns.

Cowboy Bebop was awesome. The dude's voice is in s-CRY-ed too. THAT is a show i can't understand the name of yet... Bebop (from what I know of) is probably the best. Gungrave is close... <--i think that is what its called... i dont remember.

S-cry-ed is, I think, roughly how the japanees is pronounced. is I remember the symblos right they're 'su''ka''ra''i''do'. So the first three symbols pronounce roughly 'skra' which makes it about 'skraido'. But I've barely got a rudimentary grasp of japanees so I could e way off base. It's so diverse I don't think there's a single one that takes the cake; Bebop is great, I enjoyed Ruroni Kenshin for about the same reasons but in a diffrent way, Yu Yu Hakusho is really fun, and (a rare gem it seems here) Irresponsible Captin Tylor has made me laugh more than any other anime I've ever seen, and I've seen FLCL. That's my two bits

Kino's Journey (http://www.kinosjourney.com/) was more enjoyable than most of the anime being made today, as It actually had some depth. I enjoyed Haibane Renma (http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/Showings/Haibane_renmei.shtml), also known as the Charcoal Feather Federation - for it's emotional appeal.
Beck (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4404) had great music, and started off great - but kind of fizzled into predictability.
As for action oriented anime, the original Mobile Suit Gundam (http://www.gundamofficial.com/worlds/uc/msg/index.html) series is well orchestrated and intense - unless you have too much difficulty getting passed the look of older anime.
Especially enjoyable was Char's Counter Attack (http://www.gundamofficial.com/worlds/uc/cca/index.html) - being newer the look is more crisp and the movie it's self is powerful.
As for current series, I've grown to adore Pani Poni Dash (http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,1742,ezkzee,pani_poni_dash_.html) a comedy in the style of Azumanga Daioh, but somewhat more appealing due to it's pop culture refrences.
I also love Bleach (http://www.bleachportal.net/), even if it's somewhat forgettable - because I adore Ichigo's character and voice actor.

I don't know, there's something in Bleach that keeps reminding me of Naruto, which annoys me A LOT... (the overall anime is great, though.)
Well, gotta love Chrno Crusade, Elfen Lied, X/1999 and Air TV for all the kawaii girls and deep storylines... the combination is just perfect! (especially in Elfen Lied)
As for the shounen part, we must not forget Fullmetal Alchemist, Mugen no Junin, Berserk, Peace Maker, Rurouni Kenshin and Trigun for the classic and intense moral dilemmas and violent action.

Full Metal Alchemist is so far the best anime I've ever seen or tried to even look at. Followed by Trigun. FMA has such I complex storyline that it keeps you wondering till the end. It's filled with passion, adventure, the cool fight scenes, devotion and many things more. As for Trigun it's as close to the reason I like FMA. Plus Vash does rock out loud. Oh and Kikui the reason they say that is because they are the only guns he uses more than once. Vash did use Wolfwood's gun to beat Knives. I still hate the killing of Wolfwood. He was my favorite.

Originally, my all-time favorite anime was Robotech(despite only seeing the Macross Saga arc so far. I've only seen one or two episodes of the Robotech Masters, and nothing from the New Generation, even though I've read episode synopsises for the entire series), but that changed over the summer when I came across the most amazing, insane, intelligent, hillarious, and downright brilliant anime of all time: Fooly Cooly. I've never connected with any character in any story more than Naota. I love figuring out all the little bits of meaning hidden away in all the silliness(the eyebrows are there for a reason!). I just love it so much...

Inuyasha has been cancelled IN JAPAN and has been for almost a year. After episode 167 they've stopped production of any new episodes (there is a movie that takes place after called "Fire on the Mystical Island", but like the previous four movies it is only a side story and shares little continuity with the TV series) and have yet to continue making any more. There have been talks and rumors about making more episodes, but nothing concrete yet.

mmm... I have no "best", but my top ones are:
Cowboy Bebop for music, and wesomeness.
Bleach for major coolness, and interesting story. Not to mention it's Bleachiness.
FMA, because it's really the anime that GOT me into anime. Plus, alchemy is cool. And Roy pwns j00.
Elfen Lied, because it's a really, really emotional anime. Got me furious at parts, sick at others, tearing up in some... ... ... ok, talking too much.

Martian Successor Nadiesico is one of the goofiest and most fun anime series out there. You have the most powerful spaceship in the galaxy, but it is run by morons such as Tinkawa, Eureka, and the short lived Guy Digoji. As Ruri often says, "Idiots, they're all idiots." If you have not seen this show, do yourself a favor and watch it.
Other great series are Trigun, Evengeleon, Chobits, El Hazard, Saber Marionette J, Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball (DBZ and GT included), and even Yu-gi-oh! (My roomate in college forced me to watch a lot of anime :sweatdrop )

"Black Cat". It's got everything you need. Trust me. Have I ever lied to you before?
Also, "Shuffle!" is a good one if you don't have a problem with the concept of a mainstream anime TV series based on a H-game. The first half starts out as essentially your basic harem anime and then everyone's skeletons start coming out. If you can get past the bipolar nature of it, you might enjoy it.

This anime movie is just badass in every concievable way. Take one awsome ninja, a cute but deadly in more ways than one assassin chick, and then throw a bunch of freakishly bizaar villians at them. Add lots and lots of bloodshed, and you have got yourself a truely great anime to watch.
Akira is also a very interesting movie to watch.

My favorite anime would have to be Trigun. I don't know why but I just love stupid humour. Also I like the western theme mixed with the future setting.
I also like Hellsing, Ruroni Kenshin, both .hack series, Bleach, and Full Metal Alchemist.

Yeah, Trigun is an awesome Anime. It's the kind of Anime that can make you laugh and cry. Especially at the end...
Hellsing is ok, and Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favs, especially the TV. I don't like those OVA's very much. Hack I liked the SIGN series better than DUSK, although DUSK has more action and more comedy.FMA iI thought was mediocre...and Bleach I watched only 20 or so episodes which bored me to no end. But I hear good things about it, so I'll continue.
Neon Genesis Evangelion. It has something very deep to say, despite the fact that it's awesome anyway. It's on par with great literature. It pwns j00.
If you want to know what it has to say, read The Phenomenology of Spirit by Hegel. You could probably figure it out from there, provided that you could understand anything Hegel said.

Great old school anime, which may have been some of the inspiration for the Castlevania games. If you have not watched it, it comes highly recommended by me. Though some might think my judgement is not that great.
Full Metal Archivist

My current favourites are:
NGE (It’s full of symbolism and philosophical aspects), Hellsing (Vampires!!!) and Trigun (great plot)
The last series i saw were hack//SIGN and Full Metal Alchimist which were impressive, too.

I, myself, am partial to .hack//SIGN. I've never got around to aquiring .hack//Liminaliy or .hack//Legend of the Twilight, however. I may eventually get around to watching these, and .hack//Roots, as well.
Note that I haven't seen a terribly large amount of anime to begin with ;)
Even if there's a better, though, you still have to admit that SIGN was pretty damn good.

Hmmmm, decisions, decisions...
I personally consider Full Metal Alchemist, Hellsing & Cowboy Bebop probably the bestest animes out there. They've all got great action scenes, interesting storylines to back up the action, and good OST's.

Did I ever post in this thread?
Aside from probably the norm, I'm gonna post what I think is the best Anime I have seen. For more than just it being my favorite personally but also because of what it achieved in story, characters and with what it had to work with.
And for that, I would say it is CardCaptor Sakura. Large and well thought out story, deep likeable characters and a structure that begins, follows through and ends nearly flawlessly. Not to mention nearly anyone who sees it likes the show (from kids to adults. I've gotten people from the age of 10-55, of both sexes and any other type of classification into the show and they've all liked it and wanted to see more).

Hmm, gee I have to think...
*looks around the room, from the FMA display on my bookshelf to the "Happy Edward Day" sign on my cork board*
Yeah, I would have to say Fullmetal Alchemist. It is the only series that has ever drawn me in so much that I became a FMA junky and caused me to buy all of their DVDs (I'm falling behind a bit but...) And that's saying a lot because I'm definately more of a manga junkie than anime (I can count how many animes I've seen on my fingers while my list of manga series is in the 70s), and generally I'm pretty stingy about my money, but FMA is like a drug for me and I just can't get enough of it.

Yeah, one to declare how powerful he is, one to declare his task of changing the lightbulb, two to generate the appropriate power level (Super Sayen level Four), and then one to actually change the light bulb after cleaning up the mess that super monkey has left behind.:p

Okay okay. So they can't put Outlaw Star back on air. But they shouldn’t have put FLCL back on for a second time either. According to the "Artists" their producer cut them off at the 6th episode because they didn’t like the show. It was going to be a series, but their funds were cut.
That show could have done so well! WHY GOD?! WHY?!
(At least this was what I was told in an e-mail by a friend in Japan.) If I could read Japanese I would look up the article. :stressed:

Yikes, seen too many to even be able to recount them all in one sitting :sweatdrop
i do believe i shall break them into categories, for my own unknown reasons...
Action-ey: my fav is a tie between One Piece, Hunter X Hunter, Bleach, and ROD the oav......with MANY honourable mentions...like Flame of Recca, Naruto, Bebop, Get Backers, Trigun, and Kenshin (unfortunately, i have yet to see hellsing, or berserk, or a few other ones mentioned)
Mecha: I honestly havent seen many mecha animes...never really struck my fancy...but Gundam Wing and FMP were both pretty good
Comedy: i will NEVER be able to choose a single fav in here, but i will mention a few good ones that come to mind: FLCL, School Rumble, GTO, Kodocha, Chobits, Fruits Basket (although its also very romance-ey), Rune Soldier, and Vandread
Romance: Ai Yori Aoshi is probably my favourite...personally, it struck many chords with me...another great one was Oh! My Goddess.
unfortunately, i have yet to see many other serious romance animes, as i am always have too many action or comedy animes pushed on me by friends :sweatdrop
and lastly, honourable mentions to an anime that, to me, just wouldnt fit in only one category: Ranma 1/2 , which is an action/romance/comedy, is definately one of my favourite of all time, and is pretty much the show that got me started in anime.
oh, and i also MUST mention an anime that i myself love, but have never ever seen anyone else even know of its existance >_<. and that is E's Otherwise. its basically about psychics (kinda x-menish, psychics are thought to be the "next step in evolution" by some....or as "freaks" and "monsters" by others...) and then evil corporations, and brain-washing/manipulation, and other such things....with VERY good character development, enjoyable plot, nice action scenes, funny moments, a very lovable Asuka....generally a very good show. and i would recommend it to anyone.
(yikes, that was long :sweatdrop )

Man I dont know for me it's a toss up between Samurai Deeper Kyo which has some fun fights, interesting character development, and cute plot twists or Hellsing which really blew my mind after watching the first couple of episodes. I really loved just how vulgar the characters were the premise of the protestant and catholic "supernatural control forces" and the style it was drawn in.

Full Metal Alchemist. I'm up to about 15 series that I've seen (and only about 6 I've seen all the way through), but FMA has the best mix of humor, character, plot, and timing that I've ever seen. Even more so than Cowboy Bebop, and I am a gigantic CB fan. It's a shame they couldn't have animated the entire manga, although both manga (so far) and anime are excellent with FMA.

Hmm, theres so many good ones like Trigun, DBZ, and such but I think the best has to be Cowboy Bebop. Some people claim it to be a total ripoff of Outlaw Star, but I don't think so. I also love the combination of all different cultures and such. Mixing old westerns and th ebig city life with syndicates, and space travel even. Genius. Plus the show has a good balance of humor and seriousness, and the characters are pretty cool. Great storyline as well. Certainly the best anime I've come across.

While my opinion may not be exactly expert level because I'm fairly new to anime and manga in general (stupid small towns without a freakin' bookstore to even have access to manga at all), but I've sampled a few and Fullmetal Alchemist is definately my fav right now because of it's amazing blend of... well.... everything! Except romance, but that can kinda bog you down REALLY fast. Ouran Host Club is good for a humor/romance fix (and it's fairly short), but I've yet to really plumb the depths of what is out there. I'm just hoping that Google doesn't wipe out all the anime on YouTube before I can shamelessly exploit the free anime out there xD! If anyone has any good suggestions for good anime or manga, please pm me 'cause I could always use more things to be addicted to ;P.
